Re: Buy and Hold Stock Millionaires
Clark Howard (haven't listened in a long time, but it's still relevant) always recommended that people aim to allocate zero percent of their portfolio to their company's stock. The rationale is that you have enough (too much, really) of your financial life tied to that one company already. If it goe...

General moral decline of country is a personal problem for people who think women shouldn't vote and aren't allowed to have a penis. Good news! Everyone is now allowed to have a penis--and at taxpayer expense. If you’re late will you be penalized? You have to say that the way Alex Trebek did or it ...

It is important to just understand that throwing equal amounts of money in to outcomes that are anything but equal as far as playing out does not mean you are not betting on the under dog with the same amount of money as the favorite and that in itself is a pretty heavy bet on the under dog odds Th...

Re: Texas: all hat no cattle?
Hey, I know this is in the politics section -- I do lurk at times. The Texas thing -- one specific aspect caught my eye. Everything I hear makes it sound like Texas disconnected itself at some point in the past from the more "national" interconnected grid. Is this true, and if so, why? Doesn't make...

You could just move to a state that doesn't have sales or capital gains tax on bullion (Utah, Oklahoma, Wyoming). Kansas may be heading that way too. This of course assumes they don't change their laws. Even with zero state taxes, (South Dakota) the Feds still tax capital gains on bullion. Yes, and...

Re: Minimum Living Wage
Back to single, unskilled workers, say a busboy in a Chicago restaurant. Making federal min wage of $7.25/hr. $15,080 gross per year. Is that livable in Chicago? With food, rent, utilities, phone, and possibly car expenses? Would seem to be cutting it close. I live frugally, I am pretty sure I coul...

Water's back on this evening! Still with a boil order, but much nicer than none at all. I'm almost afraid to ask, but how's your utility bill? Tell me you're not on Griddy. I've never been in an area with utility competition of any kind, so I really have trouble understanding how it even works. I'm...

Take food stamps for example. Should people be able to buy soda with food stamps? No...we limiting their freedom to make choices. I don't see any easy answers... I think this one has a defensible answer; you don't get freedom when you're dependent on charity. "Beggars can't be choosers" has been pa...

Old thread. Thinking of you all in Texas, again. Thanks! We're pretty good on power now, not so good on water. There's a city-wide boil order, which is certainly a pain, but in our neck of the woods there's just no water coming out of the pipes at all. There's still snow on the ground which can be ...

I agree that PDF is bull. I don't understand how getting the right answer equates to white supremacy. But I need to say, as I recently helped my younger one with a calculus problem -- I am a degreed engineer and I look back at how I was taught in high school and college, and for the most part it re...

Examples of classroom actions that allegedly perpetuate white supremacy include asking students to show their work, focusing on getting the right answer, tracking student success, and grading students. https://www.dailywire.com/news/asking-students-to-show-their-work-in-math-class-is-a-form-of-whit...

Poe's Law is an adage of Internet culture stating that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied.

Re: $15 minimum wage
Using BLS data it is pretty easy to see that minimum wage arguments for the most part are silly as basically no one works for minimum wage (1.1% of workers make minimum wage). Not surprisingly the demographics of those 1.1% who make minimum wage are largely: 16-24 years old Less than high school ed...
