Re: Presidential Debate Part Deux

When I followed that IMDB link, I half thought somebody had gotten clever and instead sent me to a page for "Lord of the Files." The encrypted, Bleach-Bitted files, am I right? Probably also Trump's favorite. He can't decide.

Discover Savings Account

My fiancée has been asking me about these accounts for a while now. Is anyone familiar with these? https://www.discover.com/online-banking/savings-account/ She has already opened one, and now wants me to help fund it. There appear to be few limitations, in terms of minimum balance, etc. I don't unde...

Re: First they came for the working class

I think lower class white people are killing themselves because no authorities stand up for them, or for their interests.  There is virtually nobody at the top looking out for the white poor, and everything they take pride in is mocked openly by the elites: their patriotism, their religion, and thei...

Re: How to Lower Your Credit Score in China

To me it sounded like the gov't had commissioned AliBaba to administer the system, but that it was still owned by the gov't.  Maybe I was mistaken.

Re: How to Lower Your Credit Score in China

I don't approve of the Chinese gov't managing the system, but were it fully the invention of private business I would be 100% behind it. Perhaps you're hinting that I make too many politically-tinged posts to think badly of people who post their political opinions.  However I don't think badly of th...

Re: How to Lower Your Credit Score in China

Don't you think one's credit score ought to decrease marginally, if one is buying and playing video games as an adult?  That is not the behavior you'd expect from someone who can pay off large debts. The same goes with political commentary.  Would you entrust a large loan to someone, if you knew he ...

I watched the first couple episodes.  It's good except for the narration.  I think he's supposed to sound cynical, but it's too much. Really?  My take on it is that he's supposed to sound like a well-intentioned dope. There's one point where he says that the reason the US central gov't began to tak...

Re: Dealing with Deflationary Collapse

Mortalpawn's analysis is very interesting.  For the past year I hadn't thought anything could bring gold around again.  But if there is something that could do it, at this point, it would be bank failures.  Not looking forward to that.

Re: Why aren't long term treasuries going up more?

Yes, that was a good analysis, mortalpawn.  I agree that the Fed cannot raise rates now, reasonably, but I had figured that Treasurys weren't making gains recently because people were afraid the Fed might act unreasonably. I did not consider that the decline in emerging market equity would cause ban...

Re: The P5+1 Agreement with Iran

Yeah, Obama is like Chamberlain because the Iranians are like the Germans.

Except that Persians are very unlike Germans, and are about as likely to form a strong military and conquer their neighbors as they are to stop running cons and start paying their taxes.

Project Euler forums?  I have never looked at them, but here is my guess.  It is exactly what educators, technologists, and journalists have been talking about for decades, except that it's 95% white men.

Okay, if it is only audio it's a lot less expensive.  Although it still seems like a waste unless you've already got some targets picked out.  Most of what people say has no strategic value.

Re: Don't use Google Chrome and delete it if it's on your computer

So let's say your computer records your actions on video.  What is it going to do with the recording?  Send it back to Google?  How much at a time?  That's not insignificant traffic. Google has to pay for all the network traffic it gets, just like anyone else (not that they don't try to make the ISP...

Re: Predictions For The Bottom In Gold

It will work, the same way it worked in the 80s and 90s.  It will lag equity-heavy allocations but still be a decent portfolio. I was forced to put my 401k into a Boglehead-style 60/40, by the fact that I do not have access to ETFs in it.  I am glad for the circumstances.  I do not plan to rebalance...

Re: Predictions For The Bottom In Gold

What about demographics?  Maybe the last run up in gold was because it got easier to buy houses on credit, so home prices got bid up and other physical goods with it (b/c of renovation, maintenance, and some increased wages in construction and commercial banking).  A lot of loans were made to hispan...

Re: The thought crimes of Donald Trump

About Trump, it looks like he couldn't see all the angles.  It was a mistake to question anything about McCain's war record.  There are a lot of Republican primary voters who won't like that, and the rest of the field knows it.  There are at least as many stories out now about these remarks, as ther...

Why is the incarceration rate going down now?  That can't be a good thing unless that's non-violent drug offenders being let go.

Are people going soft on crime?

at this stage counting on yields falling much lower while the fed will be pressing for higher short term rates would be in effect fighting the fed. that rarely goes well. you would have to really be betting on some event causing a prolonged flight to safety as opposed to the natural trend the fed w...

Oh no, you got me, Pet Hog! I think you may be onto something. Someone who wanted to kill you with a vehicle wouldn't have to crash into you; they could sabotage your car. Use the $500 to take the bus, walk, and bicycle. In terms of the meta-game of minimizing your chance of dying, I strongly belie...

Re: Thought Experiment

What I've learned from TV is that the most likely person to kill me is somebody who appeared early on but was never suspected, then five other people were suspected before things pointed back to this person. Haha, perhaps you should write that on a napkin and keep it in your jacket, so Lennie and E...
