Re: The political re-alignment of our time

I'd like to apologize. I realized that I'm not mad at you guys, I'm really still mad at myself, and I was taking it out on you. It was inappropriate and I'm sorry. Clearly I have more work to do on that front. Regardless, I do kind of fear for the future when we can have such divergent basic views o...

Re: The political re-alignment of our time

I don't see the light as incompatible with conflict anymore. Turning towards the light sometimes requires fighting the darkness. Luke Skywalker doesn't become a bad guy because he fights Darth Vader. He does have to struggle a bit with the concept of fighting in the name of good, which is what the c...

Re: The political re-alignment of our time

Laws have two purposes: punishment and deterrence. If we don't send people home who came here illegally or were brought here illegally, then there is no deterrence effect. We are just rewarding people for breaking the laws. We could pass an amnesty law. Guess what? In another 20 years we would have...

Re: Everything costs too much and everybody is wrong about it and who the hell knows how to fix it?

Thanks for digging this up, Vinny. Of course in the three years since I wrote that post, those things have continued to get worse. Since then, I've arrived at a personal conclusion. You don't have to agree, it's just how I've started to explain this stuff to myself: We're seeing the decay of a late-...

Re: The political re-alignment of our time

Yes, exactly. The light is so much better than the dark. We just need to give ourselves permission to go there.

Re: The political re-alignment of our time

Okay, I guess I'm a heartless bastard, so I'll bite. Mass deportation of whom? You mean people who are here illegally? Yes. And that is somehow a bad thing? Yes. Nearly all of the illegal immigrants who are being deported have children or family members who are citizens, or were brought to the USA ...

Re: The political re-alignment of our time

#5 in the first list was also right on the money (of course heartless bastards don't see it and don't mind, but that doesn't make it any less true).

Re: The AK-47 version of everything...

Spending a little more often pays off in the long run. I have a decade old HP lasterprinter which still works just fine.  I remember buying a "personal" laser printer which only lasted a year or two (also HP) and then at the suggetion of someone I know, replacing it with one of HPs more industrial ...

You must harden your heart and crush them remorselessly if you want to preserve your society.
I imagine Pointedstick saying this line in this style.
That was in fact how I said it in my mind. :)

Re: Forum / Team?

Agreed, nice to hear from you again, Tenn. FWIW I agree with you 100% about how the tenor of political discussions evolved, and I stand by that "obituary," though obviously the forum isn't dead and here you and I are still posting very occasionally. My experiences here as well as in real life during...

You can roll over unused parts of the tax credit across multiple years BTW.

Re: Maintaining Coding Skills During Break

Very interested! I'm going to start reading through this today. Thanks so much! This does indeed look quite a bit more impactful than just making another small time youtube competitor or something. I actually quite like KDE. My first exposure was waaay back in 2010 or so when I was running an AMD A...
