Re: TDS discussion thread

He's the one who got himself elected, so he's the one who gets to define what it means to be "presidential" for this four years. There is no manual of presidentialness stored in the top right desk drawer in the oval office. If you can somehow comes to terms with that fact, then you don't have TDS. I...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy

My only point is that I think the media, and everyone else, should tone down the political stuff until after we get out of lockdown. Sure, then start the criticism. Everybody is on hair trigger right now. I can picture peple fighting over TP at a store, somebody punching someone, and the other guy p...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy

It's been posted on another thread that April 16, 2020, will be the height of coronavirus deaths in the US and will be this generation's Pearl Harbor. Run a thought experiment. Do you think that on December 8, 1941, you would have woken up to find any newspaper or radio show in the country criticizi...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy

Vinny,

You must be a very gullible person if you believe anything written in today's media. They have demonstrated over and over that they are completely biased and unreliable.

I've come to think complete laissez faire libertarianism is kind of like communism. It would work if everyone in the world played along.
Both may be good in theory, but are lousy in practice, given human nature.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

Despite his many faults, the one thing I am thankful for with the Trump presidency is that it opened my eyes to see how unreliable any of the news media are. I'm including everybody in that list, including Fox. Now I take everything they have to say with 10,000 grains of salt. In my opinion, anyone ...

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

That looks like an interesting book, just the kind of thing I like to read. I'll put that on my list. The author, a Puerto Rican immigrant, has another more recent book that also looks interesting called "The Media Versus the Apprentice: The Devil Mr. Trump". Apparently, as a self-declared non-suppo...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy

Bogleheads is boring because they won't allow any political discussion. This forum is maybe going too far the other way by having people talk about every little tweet that comes out of Trump. My suggestion would be to talk about actual concrete actions (or lack thereof) taken by the President. If al...

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

By the way, that math equation blows my mind every time I look at it. It's quite amazing to thing that two irrational numbers could do something like that. Written in longhand it is something like (2.71828...) to the power of i times (3.14159...) is equal to -1. It's quite trippy. It is a fascinati...

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

Hmmm, I'm not convinced. The equation we're talking about is called the Euler identity. Mathematicians seem to think that the Euler identity is quite elegant. Why would they think that if they basically just defined it into existence? I could take a few greek symbols and give them my own definitions...

Re: Would you wear a mask?

I saw a guy driving alone wearing a mask a couple days ago. I thought that was a bit strange. If people take their masks and put them on too many times, at best they're just going through the motions of protection. At worst, they're contaminating their mask and then touching to their face. So, he p...
