Re: Buying into PP at the high?

I understand your concern. I have been reading about the PP for some time yet like you was concerned about buying into the concept at such high valuations. I ultimately decided upon a blended approach for the investment. I took 50% of my IRA and purchased the 4 ETF's (VTI, TLT, SHY and GLD). THe bal...

Re: Foreign equity in PP

I am transitioning from a similar portfolio into PP. My international stock holdings had been in VEU - roughly 25% of my stock holdings. As I was reading more about the PP and its theory, I started examining the impact of foreign business sales/profits within in the scope of the S&P 500. While e...

Re: Comparing the Three Physical Gold ETFs

Today's (11/26) closing results for GLD (-0.80%) and IAU (-1.08%) was surprising in the variance or tracking error between the two. Even more surprising is the fact that M* shows GLD with a 0.12% premium while IAU has a -0.26% discount. This is the first time I noticed such a big variance. With the ...

Re: Comparing the Three Physical Gold ETFs

It is good to have a simple factual comparison of the various options. It would seem gold storage outside the United States would help achieve a portion of the off-shore target within the PP concept.

Re: Peeking, and the Permanent Portfolio

I agree we shouldn't peek but given the "boring"  :) success of the PP, I need a little excitement each day so I peek - sometimes more than once... I will be DCA into a full PP over the next 6-8 months so I can rationalize the need to check-up on everything a little more often. Once I have...

Re: Mirroring the Market?

I have begun to see that indexing and attaining the market return year in and out is all you can reasonably expect to achieve - otherwise you are guessing (speculating) on which manager / investment concept will have the hot hand for the next few years.  Seems like PP is similar in that the indexing...

Re: Mirroring the Market?

As another new PP investor, I am a little troubled by the idea of adjusting my investments based on prior year performance. This seems a little like performance chasing and timing the market - but then I suppose periodically rebalancing to the 25% level for each investment could be viewed as a contr...

Agreed - but then if I had that level of self-discipline I would be a lot thinner and not taking Lipitor ;D

For those of us newly investing in PP this was not the type of day you want to see. Now that I'm retired I take the 1% down days a little more personal.

Re: Using PP during Retirement

Craig and Clive Thanks for the comments, suggestions and the thread link. I started my DCA into the PP this morning and should be in place at the end of 12 months. I understand the research indicates a lump sum approach is probably more successful than DCA - but I think DCA will let me sleep better....

Using PP during Retirement

Greetings I am very interested in the PP and have been working my way through the long BH thread. I am curious about using PP in the retirement - distribution phase. Most of what I have read seems to deal with the accumulation phase. I would love to hear comments from those of us who are retired. Ar...

How to handle retirement distributions from PP

After reading Mr. Browne's Fail-Safe Investing book, I am seriously considering moving a portion of my IRA into the PP. I will begin taking funds from my IRA in 18 months to fund our retirement. How are others taking their retirement distributions from their PP. Do you take it from the cash balance ...
