Exploring Gold Ownership Options
I've been running a PP for about 3 years. The one thing I've struggled with is how to own gold. Up until now, I've owned gold ETFs in tax advantaged accounts (Roth, IRA, profit sharing plan). Since gold doesn't throw off interest or dividends, I know that I shouldn't be using up valuable tax adva...

Re: Getting Started
basic, If you buy IAU in a taxable account, make sure you understand and are comfortable with the tax consequences. I bought IAU in a taxable account in January. About a week or two later, I found out about the need to calculate adjusted basis as described here: http://us.ishares.com/content/strea...

Re: Is PRPFX cost (expense + tax) efficient? The answer is NO.
chrikenn, Interesting post. I've also run a similar analysis to yours. Like you, I concluded that a traditional 4x25 PP in taxable accounts would ultimately have a lower total cost (including ERs and taxes) than PRPFX.....unless I'm just missing something. One note about gold. I actually purchase...

Cash for Taxable Accumulator
I'm getting ready to make my first PP contributions. For now, I've decided that my existing tax advantaged accounts will remain more "traditional". However, I plan on making new SEP-IRA and taxable contributions to the PP each year starting this year. For PP purposes, my tax advantaged space is li...

Re: Saving for college
I was researching PP options for 529 plans a few weeks ago. I found an iShares 529 plan which has TLT, SHY and so on. Unfortunately, it is not a direct sold plan, and I don't have an advisor.

Using SCV and EM
Using the Simba spreadsheet, I took a look at the impact of using SCV (VISVX) and EM (VEIEX) for the equity portion. The tables below summarize the results of one scenario. Note the following: - Both options assume 25% Gold, 25% LT Bonds and 25% TBills/Treasury Money Market - Option A assumes 25% ...

Re: What Permanent Portfolio Rules do you "break"?
I'm just getting started with PP, but I feel like I'll be breaking a few rules too. First, I'm considering PP to be my Plan B. My main portfolio is a typical DFA 60/40 slice and dice with some gold and commodities mixed in. I'm not prepared to abandon Plan A. My goal is to put enough in Plan B so...

Re: Using I Bonds for Cash
I think I-bonds are awesome. One of the things they do is instantly expand your tax-deferred space. People will catch on to this one day I am sure. In your view, are there any limits to how far this can be taken? Hypothetically, would you be willing to hold 100% of your cash in I-bonds during th...

Re: Using I Bonds for Cash
Thank you for your responses. fnord123 - I have a separate emergency fund in an ING account. I don't expect to touch any of these funds for quite some time (15-25 years). Even so, I take your point regarding I-Bonds not being available for 12 months (and even longer if one wishes to avoid interest...

Using I Bonds for Cash
I'm interested in starting a new PP. I'm starting from scratch (as far as this portfolio is concerned). I hope to contribute approximately $40K per year. Of the $40K in new contributions each year, about $14-16K would be new tax deferred contributions. Given limited tax deferred space, would it ...
