Re: Gold Substitutes
First off, great post overall, but I'm not following you here. What luxury does PoW not afford? I see three social consensus mechanisms w/ tradeoffs. I appreciate it. If I understood you correctly, you responded with "As an aside, this kind of describes fiat currency, doesn't it?" to Seajay saying ...

Re: Gold Substitutes
As an aside, this kind of describes fiat currency, doesn't it? At one point we forked off the gold system into a new system where corrupting the ledger could be done at will by those in power. It would be entirely disruptive and totally devastating if one held all their wealth in said system, so we...

Re: Bitcoin in the PP?
I think theres a difference between "money printing" and CPI, dont you? And it seems BTC responded well to money printing, perhaps even one of the best assets from price appreciation perspective (up ~700-1000% during the printing period). Of course other assets benefit from the printing (stocks). H...

Re: Bitcoin in the PP?
Inflation is such a poor word since it can mean so much. You’re right CPI didn’t inflate during "the printing". And now during the tightening (of money supply) CPI is high. But the point is the same. When the money was looser/being printed/whatever name we give it (monetary inflation seems good ter...

Re: Bitcoin in the PP?
Doesn’t seem that paradoxical to me. Any country that can print their own currency is not likely to adopt BTC. So you are left with non-printing countries as more likely BTC adopters. Of those non-printers, the ones closest/friendliest/under-the-thumb of the US (or other money printers) are the lea...

Re: Bitcoin in the PP?
Down almost 66% since November 2021... kbg don't you know that dollar valuation is just an illusion? There's only 21 million Bitcoin and 1 sat = 1 sat, so Bitcoin's value remains immutable. The repricing of everything around it is the fault of mismanaged financialization. The purity of Bitcoin is e...

And more so when someone repeatedly posts content in wrong places. A web site forum dedicated to Chevrolet pickup's, brakes sub-section, repeatedly having someone posting how using ballet shoes instead of conventional shoes because they personally particularly like, or benefit from the promotion of...

Re: Did Bitcoin Kill Gold’s Monetary Utility?
I agree that taking a deep breath and relaxing would be good for everyone. Online discussions often get heated. Online discussions about finance get even more heated. And online discussions that relate to ethics/lifestyle get especially heated. It seems like everyone here is on the same page, so des...

Re: Bitcoin question (How did FBI recover some pipeline ransom)
Its really nothing to do with proof of work lacking privacy. Monero uses pow for example and is much more private. Privacy (in Bitcoin) is really all about how you use Bitcoin. It can be very private or it can be very public. The number and usability of the privacy tools available are increasing. F...

Re: Bitcoin question (How did FBI recover some pipeline ransom)
"This can be said about anything" - not really. It cant be said about the vast majority of financial transactions like buying stock, sending a wire transfer, cashing a check, etc. Agreed on your point about Bitcoin privacy/fungibility "out of the box" not being strong. Well sure, but I hope that wo...

Re: Bitcoin question (How did FBI recover some pipeline ransom)
I make this point every time somebody extols the privacy benefits of Bitcoin. Literally all your transactions are recorded permanently, publicly, and for all time. That's the opposite of "privacy" in every way. Its really a spectrum of potential privacy. I could put my name and address in a bitcoin...

Re: Clarifying Cryptocurrency Developments
The security of the peg and the security of the blockchain are two different issues and in order to have true bitcoin defi you need both. I understand the tech side of it. My criticism wasn't about the implementation of the how, it was about the rationale for the why. Sure merge-mining increases "s...

I hope to address some of the points raised by Arthur in this thread: https://www.gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12334. I'll try to limit the scope because I find it incredibly hard to follow the conversation when there are many points and having to follow all the quotes back and...

Re: A worthwhile read for all PP'ers
Im not sure how CBDCs compete for market share. See: I said "CBDC and regulations" together on purpose. It's less a matter of technical implementation and more about the broad adoption of a system that provides utility. All of the things you mentioned are technical positives in theory, but that peo...

Re: A worthwhile read for all PP'ers
I don’t see any similarities between LN and paypal. I’m not sure how LN channels which are trustless and secure by the bitcoin network are considered centralized. There are now LN to BTC, LN to RBTC submarine swaps and once RBTC can be pegged in and out trustlessly via taproot and RSK is 100% merge...

Now you got me interested. What kind of developments in LN and BTC are you focused on? I should clarify that I still respect Lyn. She does good work, I just used to consider her in the top echelon of market observers and that esteem has faded to a more lukewarm appreciation. It's less about the dev...

Re: A worthwhile read for all PP'ers
I heard a very good description by Lyn Alden (big fan of hers) Bitcoin is gold and a tech stock combined. I used to be a big fan as well. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?) her crypto coverage has opened my eyes to her faults. She's a very good financial-narrative dissector, but from a generalis...

Regarding limited supply as money, KBG has provided relevant insights before, but fair points BintheVP. We disagree on a few things, but I think we presented our cases openly and amicably. Hopefully it'll be good food for thought for others. I'll wait until the next route of discussion to chime in. ...

Re: BTC in the PP
To make things simple, people should know that the type of blockchain bitcoin is is considered more secure than most of the newer blockchains that are mostly some version of proof of stake. At the end of the day, encryption is probabilistic and it is secure enough for most people, I think that is a...

Re: BTC in the PP
There is a disconnect here. Bitcoin isnt the chain with the most proof of work, it’s the chain with the most proof of work that is valid . Miners that follow the existing Bitcoin protocol, which all current Bitcoin Core nodes run and enforce, can "misbehave" (for lack of a better word) in limited w...

Security : Bitcoin involves counter-parties whereas gold does not. No. Fundamentally bit coin is a pretend scarcity, no different to clackers, only remain scarce until circumstances direct towards expansion of numbers. With a physical finite scarce object/item there are physical limits on expansion...

I've been following this site passively with no intention of contributing, but the recent discussions of Bitcoin have given me a particular itch that I couldn't help but scratch. Bitcoininthevp has been a great resource, but there are some things that I feel need to be addressed, so I will do that. ...
