Re: Investments Versus Liquidity
I think you may be confused by T+2 here. Investing is about duration. Knowing you won't need some amount of funds for a given period (N days, months, years, perhaps decades). By that token, I consider even some of my "cash" funds "illiquid" (I could, theoretically, sell them; I j...

By now this even made its way into mainstream press:

Re: Why the big move in gold?
If you want to have even more fun, look at gold priced in CHF, YTD charts.
That move is really quite something.

Forum errors
Figured with the recent price increase I'd revisit gyroscopicinvesting again to see what you've all been cooking.
Only issue is, I can barely read any threads -- as most will return an HTTP/500 error when clicking on the links.
What's up with that?

Re: New Permanent Portfolio book: "Investing Equanimity"
Bumping this thread as I've just held in hand the book once more. Quoting myself in a post of the EarlyRetirementExtreme forum: One of the best books on the Permanent Portfolio that I've come across so far was Investing Equanimity: The Logic & Wisdom of The Permanent Portfolio by Eric Deslaurier...

Re: This is the best time in 45 years to invest in the Permanent Portfolio
Something to note about four-fund portfolios consisting of mostly uncorrelated assets is that as long as you rebalance consistently -- monthly is generally found to be the optimal frequency -- you'll outperform vs a buy-and-hold investor just from harvesting volatility. Rebalancing premiums are quit...

Re: This is the best time in 45 years to invest in the Permanent Portfolio
I, for one, welcome my new volatility overlords. Best time to plant a tree was eighty years ago. Second best time is now. The Permanent Portfolio is a special case of a constant-ratio rebalanced portfolio and as such I don't care too much about the near-term direction of any component - I care more ...

Re: Huh, 1/N Asset Allocation is Quite Robust
I'll piggy-back on this a little - "fixed-mix strategies", which is, rebalancing between a smaller number of individual allocations, like the permanent portfolio does, do quite well also: Dempster, Evstigneev, Schenk-Hoppé (2009): Growing Wealth with Fixed-Mix Strategies This chapter surve...

Re: DIY Real Estate
IF you are going to spend hours a day reading investment news, you probly are better off doing housing where you can get your boots on the ground and research neighborhoods, schools and contractors. VS trusting MSM stock tips and competing against millions of other investors online. What you state ...

Re: DIY Real Estate
Being in nyc smart money has opportunities in real estate not available elsewhere thanks to the fact politicians tried to screw over landlords with rent stabilization. Those who learned how to use it to their advantage could make a lot of money … I was never interested in just collecting rents …. I...

Re: How much can you not afford to lose?
Good thread, many interesting responses. I'll add one. Retirement calculations all derive from, essentially, three things: 1. Current portfolio size 2. Size of expected future inflows ("additional savings") 3. Life expectancy at retirement. Market shenanigans impact 1 and 2 negatively (ass...
