Re: Gold Coin Balance Fooled by fake gold Eagle

I think slabbed are not ideal as there are numerous fake slabs known. Besides it puts a barrier between you and measuring the density, dimensions and sound. Some gold dealer shows some fake Eagles that came into his store.  These are pretty good fakes.  Scary! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P1h6uX...

Re: The GOLD scream room

Every time metals have their CME margin decreased the price collapses, I can remember this happening at least 3 times in last few years. Anyone know these dates off the top of their head? I want to see what gold did in following days/weeks after those similar events.

What kind of coin?... The only fake I've seen is a kruger and it looked pathetic. I know there are some clever and good looking silver fakes but has anyone ever held a convincing gold fake?

Re: Permanent Portfolio 2013 Results.

There results are all pre-dividend too aren't they? Rates/dividends on equal quads come to 1.4% (0.9% cash, 2.8% bond, 1.9% stock, 0% gold)... So PP was down probably less than 1.99%. Maybe there was some anomalie that made Jan1 entries especially good?... Otherwise I can't understand the hysteria t...

Re: Master list of PP component ETF/MFD options

This hasn't been updated in a while... It needs work. Had some help from wizards earlier, like Akratic, but most people just come in and start editing it to their own devices and mess up the original. Think the list will have to be locked and PM more for link to edit it. Also, thinking that mutual f...

Is anyone else finding this useful? I do and would like to keep it thorough and up-to-date.

But keeping it up is some extra work... Thanks to people who fix/add.

Re: rebalancing physical

If you're early in the accumulation phase I'd just add more to everything else.

Otherwise I always thought 50% ETF was too much and used 30% as an ETF target... In all the back testing I did, I never had to sell off large amounts of physical.

Re: Leverage a dollar position?

Or you can use the 2-3x leveraged ETFs if you don't want to deal with a margin call and can accept a little tracking error. Holding long 3x ETFs (maybe even 2x) is not a good idea... Value will decay based on the reset to 0 calculations performed daily... Shorting the 2,3,4x can be a good idea but ...

when it comes to markets / capitalist system, i think the way operators take notice is thru buy/selling... LOL, of course... With a cooler head I can shake my head in embarrassment at my earlier comment, as I'm sure HB would have done. Plans are in place to decouple from TLT and move into mostly ac...

very interesting, blackomen... Looks like a good idea. Have you done any backtesting to see how your system would have performed historically?

Re: TLT - Why Is Income from Govt Obligations so LOW?

Very disturbing... Maybe we could start a petition of some kind and try to get them to address these concerns? I'd sell it outright but I have a lot of capital gains in TLT waiting... And my taxable income will be much lower next year. :-\ ... Damnit, was so happy with TLT; easy to liquidate, monthl...

Re: Leverage a dollar position?

There are 3x ETFs for USD now: UUPT (bull) UDNT (bear). But to go long you will have value eroded by time decay. You could short the bear, but that could get ugly.

Re: Leverage a dollar position?

lol, "worst arbitrage ever" it is... Seems like the only way margin could be used effectively as a dollar position is if there was some kind of leverage, but then you have volatility.

Re: Leverage a dollar position?

I have an excellent margin rate of 0.9% and I deducted this from my taxes... Over the years of observation I have become very comfortable with the use of margin in the PP and have been slowly increasing it, but still never plan to ever be near the possibility of a margin call. I suppose if 2008 x 2-...

Leverage a dollar position?

I've been using margin for the PP for years with great success... All 3 other components are easy to margin, but not cash. It doesn't really make sense to use margin to buy SHY and pay more interest than it will earn. What about deep in the money calls for SHY?... What about a 2x dollar bull ETF?......

Seems that the CME margin hike has a big hand in this... The last time they raised margin gold reacted with 2 very down days.

I've used the buying opportunity to move out of ETFs and into physical.

The same was said for Ralph Nader back in 2000. The fringe of any society always believe their candidate is being ignored by the media. Well, I don't consider myself "fringe" and Paul supporters do not make up a "society." :D I'm not even saying it's likely, I'm just saying that those who insist it...

Ron Paul has no chance. He won't even win the nomination. if the primary election is fair and honest and people vote for him he is just as capable of winning as anyone. :) a new Harris pole is putting him ahead of obama in a run off, i don't know how accurate their polling is but he has some pretty...

Re: Thoughts on PP if the dollar becomes gold/silver backed again

It would certainly change the game if massive inflation was no longer the threat it is... I wouldn't worry about it until it happens. Frankly I just can't see it happening, too much power for central banking and inflationary policies. Ron Paul won't be elected President (though I am sure he would do...

I'm thinking that would be a logical break and have an ETF list and a MF list. Myself I am really only interested in the ET...
