Re: Getting Started
I just finished reading Craig's book after hearing about the Permanent Portfolio a year ago. I have decided to switch my IRA completely to the PP. However, at the moment, 3 of the four pieces are at or near 5 year highs. Stocks (S&P just went over 1500 today), Gold (not at record but close), and Lo...
Re: PHYS
Tom, be aware that over the last forty years there have been periods of significant draw down in the permanent portfolio, and that one could occur when you are ready to cash out for the down payment. It may not be likely, but it is possible. What is your time horizon for buying a home?

Re: Direction of forum
When this forum began, I appreciated, and still do, the fact that economic, political and social issues were not taboo, compared to the mega-thread at the Bogleheads site. These topics are at times difficult to discuss without strong feelings and potentially insulting decarations, and if I were to s...

I wonder, what has happened with Tulving? I have always been satisfied with prior orders. I have seen complaints in the past, but delayed, uncertain delivery is a problem that I would pay a little more to avoid.

Nothing specific, other than wondering if there will be an asset sale based on panic selling.

On another thread, Gosso wrote the following: " Honestly, I see no problem with someone converting the STT/LTT to an intermediate bond holding with an average duration of 5 years. Below are the real CAGR of a portfolio with 50% allocated to a bond fund with an average duration of 5 years (this can ...

Re: Long bonds and a new, well off investor
My concern is that his holdout is based on a continued belief in market timing, but my thought in supporting DCA is that it would allow him to have a stake in all of the assets of the portfolio, and watch how they respond to the unexpected in the future with some skin in the game. Certainly, all in ...

Long bonds and a new, well off investor
I have a friend that has been following the PP for about a year, and while he has internalized the concepts, is still having a hard time buying long bonds. In all honesty, it is much easier for me to own them as part of my portfolio than it would be to buy all of them today. He is at present running...

Re: Anti-U.S. Protests in the Muslim World
I saw an article that indicated the movie seemed to focus relentlessly on Obama's use of the N-word in his autobiography. What I don't understand is why the anti-Obama crowd focuses on the fringes around his life - why not focus on his policy? With Bush, the left only had to focus on his policy, ...

I really enjoyed reading Brian Greene's book on this topic several years ago: http://www.amazon.com/The-Elegant-Universe-Superstrings-Dimensions/dp/0375708111/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top It might be tough sledding for those with a minimal science background, but is very clearly written and entertaining...

Was Reagan a liar? Was Truman? Was Eisenhower? Was Lincoln? Was JFK? Were they all liars? Yes, absolutely. One cannot intentionally become politically successful in a democracy without being or becoming a liar, a panderer, or both. And the more power we're talking about, the truer this becomes. I s...

Foglifter, I use safety deposit boxes, and as MediumTex might say, sleep like a 14 year old house cat. There is some risk in every method of owning gold and I try to mitigate this with diversity.

My desire for choices is variable: gadgets, vacations, food...good. But if I am roped into a trip to pick out upholstery fabric with my wife, the myriad choices, and her thoroughness, suck the life force from my body.

I just finished this book, and wanted to recommend it to those of you that enjoyed "The Big Short". As always, he does it in an interesting, and easily understood fashion, w...
