Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

BTW Smith forgot to mention - good luck if you can get through that book while working out! It is a pretty dense read, but absorbing. Have fun! As an experiment, I have switched entirely from having my headphones in while working out to reading a book. The only exception is when I'm doing certain t...

Re: The tech-dumbell portfolio

Is it 20/40 or 15/35? I would expect all assets to fall within 15/35% to correspond with recommended rebalancing bands. I am on the fringes with a 40/15/15/30 allocation ;D Very cool, Budd! Can you specify which asset is which in your 40/15/15/30 mix? I love hearing about people's PP variations. (T...

Re: The tech-dumbell portfolio

I am VERY drawn to a portfolio of cash and gold right now along with paying off all of my existing debt. The PP has served me well. And I am well aware of the money lost over the years thinking "this time is different." I didn't think this time was different in the tech bubble nor in 2008...

Re: Ray Dalio: Money, Credit, Debt and Economic Activity

So, I was perusing through the hallowed ground of the original HB PP thread. I came across a post from one of the more prominent Bogleheads named Rick Ferri, whose comments are very relevant to this discussion here. rick ferri.png Failed gold speculation aside (which was tongue in cheek by the sound...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

I prefer this round 2 :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LA1-1DlhuXU I watched this in college (the first time) and it's honestly how I really fell in love with economics. It suddenly wasn't just some dry topic, it became a FIGHT. ;D In other economic news related to the crisis, there's a mini-docu...

actually the fund provider has to do a lot of behind the scenes work arbitraging the etf to the stock prices of the underlying assets to try to keep things fairly close
Well, there can be many market makers, but yes.

Yeah, as per above. If you are with a commission-less brokerage platform (such as Wealthsimple Trade here in Canada) that's amazing in combination with ETFs.

Re: Ray Dalio: Money, Credit, Debt and Economic Activity

I think using Gold tokens would work fine and from my own point of view I would be getting rid of the fiat like a "hot potato". The author of the YouTube video, suggests that having debts denominated in fiat is preferable as it would avoid deflation. Anyways..... the theory made it into t...

Re: The tech-dumbell portfolio

The overall thesis is that when things are normal, missing out on maximum portfolio performance isn't disastrous. But when things are insane, it's very important to have a portfolio that can handle such insanity. The last thing I need in a crisis is to have to worry about whether my savings are sec...

Re: Funds or etfs for Stocks

The narrative behind ETFs being more efficient lies in the fact that they do not have to trade internally nearly as much as traditional mutual funds. When an ETF unit holder sells his/her shares, the fund provider usually has no involvement. With a traditional mutual fund, the fund provider must chu...

Re: The tech-dumbell portfolio

Libertarian666, do you mind sharing a bit more about your thoughts and reasoning behind your portfolio? What's the overall thesis? How arbitrary are the percentages? Do you have a threshold/target price for gold? What would the rest of the capital markets have to look like for you to put some money ...

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

I rewatched Shutter Island the other day. If anything I found the movie more enticing and engaging the second time through. Once you know the plot twist you pick up all kinds of subtle signs and clues that you would not have the first time. Every time that Dr. Sheehan is mentioned the camera quickly...

Re: Ray Dalio: Money, Credit, Debt and Economic Activity

Another thought on how investors like the Knuckleheads just don't "get" gold. I have noticed there's a very strong tendency for some investors to over-mathematize the investment process. In particular, the Knuckleheads forum literally doesn't allow the discussion of politics. By not allowi...

Ray Dalio: Money, Credit, Debt and Economic Activity

This may have been posted somewhere on the forum previously. I can't get over how great this Ray Dalio essay is on the short and long-term debt cycles. In terms of how it relates to the PP, Dalio essentially argues that the reason why investors like the Knuckleheads don't value gold is because they ...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

I wonder if this general difference in perspective towards health authorities is common for people chatting across the 49th parallel. It's interesting that I don't see that level of cynicism from anyone here locally. Then again, here in B.C (and Canada generally) our Coronavirus response seems to ha...
