Re: Emergency Cash "Rules"

This has been such a refreshing thread to read! I don't know why, maybe because it embraces such a conservative approach to money. I've had an interesting few years when it comes to investing and cash. I used to have all of my money in cash, because of market fears and indecision and a lack of time...

Yes indeed. It was +2%.  I'm a DIY guy but PRPFX would easily be my 2nd choice, at least pending some data on PERM.

Re: GTU Discount

I am rather uncomfortable with closed ended funds for the gold portion of a PP. There is no way to know how future events will effect their premium/discount. Those things can go all over the board and seriously skew your gold returns either up or down. Closed ended funds are fine for a VP. But I wou...

Good write up... http://etfprophet.com/the-permanent-portfolio/ I actually posted the same thing earlier that day .  ;D But, the charts at your link look bigger and better. I pity the fool who's holding Stockton Muni bonds… STOCKTON – Years after betting on a sustained housing boom to bankroll a waterfront redevelopment and dole out salary and benefit perks to city employees and retirees, Stockton cashed in its chips Tuesday in a plan that will lead it into bankruptcy...

Re: Germans brace for a possible Euro crash

If the Euro does collapse, and I agree that it is a real possibility, then Mike Cuggino over at PRPFX is going to look like a genius for holding onto that 10% allocation in Swiss Francs. Unlikely! The Swiss put in price ceilings on the Euro appreciation last year. They were getting killed with thei...

Re: Stocks during hyper-inflation

I would be careful about referencing Zimbabwe for the performance of stocks in a hyperinflation. Zimbabwe is not an industrialized nation. It is decidedly third world. I don't think I could regard their stock market's performance as indicative of how things would go in an industrialized state. Bette...

Germans brace for a possible Euro crash

...Investment experts at Deutsche Bank now feel that a collapse of the common currency is "a very likely scenario." German companies are preparing themselves for the possibility that their business contacts in Madrid and Barcelona could soon be paying with pesetas again. And in Italy, for...

Anxiety rises and wealthy rush to Swiss banks (geographic diversification)

ZURICH — Investors trying to protect their wealth from global economic uncertainty have been stashing bank notes, gold bars and other valuables in Swiss banks, fuelling demand for safe deposit boxes. The euro zone debt crisis and fear that loose policy by central banks will stoke inflation have sen...

Wall Street and the Corruption of the Municipal Bond Market

An interesting article on the Muni Bond Market. Disclaimer; the author has an ideological axe that she grinds quite a bit in the essay. But I think many of her points are fair. http://judymorrisreport.blogspot.com/2012/06/municipal-bonds-license-to-steal-and.html [Edit] I wasn't really sure where to...

Re: Relative Newbie... Not happy with 1 year performance

PRPFX is a good fund. That's not something I say lightly since I have a strong prejudice against actively managed mutual funds. But its asset allocation is based on an early incarnation of Harry Browne's PP and it is definitely weighted towards an inflationary scenario. Thus it tends to perform more...

Re: Surprised in TLT Performance since FOMC Announcement

I concur with Storm's assessment. I think the markets had QE3 priced in and when they got QE3 x (1/10) there was universal disappointment. Note that gold also fell on the announcement. But its coming. I see no way around it unless they are prepared to watch the depression deepen significantly.

Historical Trivia: Travel and Money Before the ATM

So what did one do for money in the pre-ATM era if you had to leave town on business or pleasure? For obvious reasons most banks declined to cash simple cheques drawn against accounts from a non-local institution not well known to them. But people had to travel even before the era of trains, steamsh...

Re: Pick Your Poison

I used to be a fan of single malt scotch or bourbon. Never really much cared for beer. But nowadays I rarely drink except for an occasional glass of wine over a nice dinner. I favor reds, especially port, but I also like a good Hock now and then.

Re: Why McDonalds (and other fast food) looks different in ads

I swore off fast food, junk food and soda seven months ago when I realized I was pushing 250 lbs and was a prime candidate for a hear attack before turning fifty. I started walking and worked my way up to 6 miles a day 6 days a week. Today I weighed myself for the first time in a couple of months an...
