Re: a Wealth Tax thread

I know she's saying "don't worry this will only affect the ultra-rich" now, but isn't that what they said about the AMT? Not just the AMT, but the income tax itself initially only affected a tiny portion of the population. Now look where we are. Same thing with taxes on SS benefits. Origi...

Re: Countering medical cost myths

What has been your history? I've been off sugar since 1985 (but tons of fruit) yet I go for three cleanings per year so as to make the whole experience much less painful. I'm known as the model patient for the way I take care of my teeth (flossing and brushing). I seem to be prone to plaque buildup...

Instead, there's a body of literature (epidemiology and physiological mechanism studies) linking Alzh...

Re: The GOLD scream room

Anyone read/hear anything that's slamming gold and bonds today? Everyone will be putting 100% of their money in the stock market forever or something like that? No risk 25% a year investing? WSJ says In Europe, negative yields on some long-term government bonds—which had alarmed investors when they...

. . . Alzheimer's (which has been rightly dubbed as type 3 diabetes).
Please explain! Sounds interesting.
I thought cancer was being dubbed as type 3 diabetes.

Re: Countering medical cost myths

The average 30-year-old is on SEVEN (7) prescription medications?? And 70 is pretty old, I guess, but TWENTY-SIX drugs is the average?? I read that 90% of those over 65 are taking either blood pressure or cholesterol medications. But I'm as astounded as you are by each of the stats you cited. I've ...

Re: The Republican Brain?

The over-arching problem is Americans are incapable of critical thinking, especially as relates to anything quantitative. That's why most of the young scientists and engineers are of Asian (Sinitic or Indic) cultural backgrounds. Americans would rather teach their kids to be gender fluid strippers ...

I guess the only thing I would disagree with is the use of the word "crisis" for all these things. I can definitely see things I would call gathering storms but I don't recall any time in my life where you couldn't sense those if you looked hard enough. Just had a real family crisis over t...

To circle back and tie into what Vinny said, what happens when, for whatever reason, less companies decide to go public? Private equity, now that is truly immoral. Who's denying reality when they claim there are 312 different genders? Or that a boy is a girl? What percentage of non-Republicans do you think believe that? Since Steyer and Yang have virtually zero chance of becoming the eventual nominee, what cognitive dissonance will get you to vote for Biden or Warren considering the grade you have given them? The only other one with a prayer is Sanders, and I believe you said in another thread that you dislike him...

Watched the whole season of "Diagnosis" last night. Had to get past the fact that it was produced by the New York Times but I thought it was about as good as "reality TV" gets. It's basically a non-fiction version of "House" and the female doctor who wrote for the Times...

According to library records the last book I checked out was "The Mandibles". I think it might have been recommended by somebody on this forum. I don't remember reading more than a few pages, however, and I can say the same of the prior three that I checked out. I just keep them on the lam...

He had a fine life before he ran for President. Now he is attacked 24/7 by the vast majority of the media as well as the other Democrats. Yet he is continuing to try to fulfill the promises he made to his supporters, when he could much more easily give up and go back to his previous life. Sounds li...

I think he will probably be re-elected if he can keep his head when all those around him are losing theirs and blaming it on him (re: Kipling). Not necessarily connected to Trump's re-election but I thought this was an excellent article about the juvenile state of partisan politics..... https://www....

I initially went all in with the PP in 2008 but transitioned to the GB about 3 years ago. The reason I did that was precisely for the reason people often warn about with the standard 4x4 - that it will be hard to stick with in times of prosperity when stocks are outperforming (hello Bud and Mathjak)...

The history of math and science is interesting. Still, in *math* class, I suspect math majors (graduates) would prefer to just teach math. My first-year college calculus class had a "history of math" extension (one hour a week in the evenings) as part of the honors program. I found it ver...
