Re: Portfolio Tracking to replace Google Finance

alphatrackr.com is the best one I've found for manual tracking of a portfolio.

Re: Purpose of the PP

The PP is the vehicle I use for allocating my entire LIQUID portfolio, including war-chest cash reserves and savings for purchases that are years in the future, such as a new vehicle. I don't mentally divide my liquid assets by what account it is held in or what type of asset it is. I take a holisti...

Re: European PP

Looks decent to me, without being familiar with the particulars of those specific ETFs. Good call on holding a good chunk of gold in physical form. If the "Gold Bullion Securities" you are referring to is gold equity, like miners and refiners and such, then that breaks the warranty of the PP ... but...

The classic PP works in Canada exactly as it was designed to, and has so for almost 50 years now, despite Canada always being tilted towards natural resources and commodities. If anything, the volatile boom/bust nature of commodities works in favour of the PP: it increases the volatility of your st...

If anyone pays attention to ongoing academic research much of it is now pointing out how much of the previous stuff A) was garbage or B) was not garbage but now no longer outperforms.
Can you elaborate on this?

Check out That One Privacy Site . It features what is easily the most comprehensive comparative list of VPNs on the internet. His most highly recommended VPN is Mullvad . I personally use AirVPN because it is faster in my region than Mullvad but has a similiarly excellent reputation for privacy and ...

Re: Risk Parity and the Permanent Portfolio

Tyler is defiantly on to something when he differentiates between volatility risk parity and economic risk parity. It seems to me that the PP is not at all a volatility parity portfolio. If it were, it would weight its constituent assets in proportion to the amount of volatility they have tended to ...

Re: Question on safety of ETFs

I think it is most essential that you ensure that your gold is not represented significantly through ETF holdings. As long as you have physical gold, you are automatically hedged against a systemic failure of the ETF system. If some major ETF's suddenly became illiquid or started trading at a signif...

Re: Pragcap: why does the rebalancing bonus work

You don’t rebalance to beat the market. You rebalance to ensure you don’t get scared out of the market. This is the crucial element here. Again, it’s all about behavioral alpha. The suboptimal strategy that you stick with is better than the optimal strategy that you bail on. That’s because you’ll a...

Re: PP performance for Q1 2018

Canadian PP: 0.40%
Federal Bonds (long): 0.68%
Federal Bonds (short): -1.32%
Gold: 4.54%
TSM: -1.95%

Makes me wish I had originally went with 3 month T-Bills rather than 1-5 year bonds for the cash portion. When my short bonds reach the green again (someday...) I'll be switching to T-Bills.

Imagine an ancient warrior who has a sturdy, battle-proven shield: this shield has saved his life before, many times in fact. He knows it well, he knows its weight, its balance, its capabilities and limitations. He has an intuitive feel for it, almost like it is an extension of his body. He trusts i...

Re: The Farmhand Who Could Sleep Through Anything

In keeping with the humble farmer theme: There is a Taoist story of an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. "Such bad luck," they said sympathetically. "We'll see," the farmer replied. The next morning the...

Some would say 30 year treasuries ARE the coming storm... but those same people have been predicting that storm for more than a decade now. If you predict that it's going to rain everyday, eventually you'll be correct, but that doesn't mean you were right.

The Farmhand Who Could Sleep Through Anything

There once was a farmer looking for a your man to help out at the farm. There were several young men who interviewed for the job and as far as the farmer could tell they were about equally well qualified. He then went and asked them each one final question...Tell me, he would say, Why should I hire ...

For physical (40% of my gold allocation) I order from silvergoldbull.ca . Free, fast shipping; usually the lowest premiums I can find. Online dealers are pretty much the only way to go, IMO -- brick and mortar dealers just can't compete. For international storage (40% of my allocation) I use Goldmon...

There's a quote from the Bogleheads PP thread that always stuck with me, and I think it really applies to Budd's chronic PP anxiety: In my experience, most people don’t particularly like their portfolios, much less get a lift from them. They tolerate their portfolios. They may be pleased enough with...

Good to hear from you Craig, and thanks for stopping by. Re: Is the PP going to hold up?

If stocks keep nose diving, either gold or LTT will kick in. My bet is gold -- figuratively, of course, because technically am betting on both... and on a stock rebound, for that matter.
