Yep, we got ready yesterday and today. Not eggs, bread, milk, but other things. Cupboards were bare anyway.

Re: Mutual funds versus ETFS??

When you sell shares of Vanguard mutual funds, you can sell again tomorrow, but you may have to wait two months to buy back. That doesn't bother me and in fact I use mutual funds for stocks.

Canada, too.

By the way, Jan, the wiki page for this Vermont governor says his mother was from the Netherlands. Maybe some influence there.

World peace is a laudable goal, but not possible in a planet filled with humans (see above). I believe it is possible with an AI Overlord.  I don't actively advocate or fund this end yet ... in just 10 more years, computing power will be as powerful as the human brain.  Beyond that.... Like the Esc...

I don't know whether it's accurate, but I've been using the following for a long time

Code: Select all

=Index(ImportHTML("http://apmex.com/","table",1),2,2)
And I'm sure I got it from this forum.

... To clean after use, simply warm the pan and wipe with paper towel.  For sticky stuff, hot water is usually sufficient.  One of these is also helpful.    A very light coat of your favorite cooking lubricant after cleaning keeps the iron in top condition.  No Soap! ... I always struggle to clean ...

Oh yes! I think he did make a passing reference to ICFs, but did not say they were not expensive. I don't know how long ICFs have been around but maybe they'll take over in due time. Wonderful idea.

I was asking my contractor why there aren't more poured concrete homes in the States and he said part of it was insulation. If you're already in the right climate, that's different.

I thought adobe was the way to go in your neck of the woods, PS.

I understand risk parity better than I used to and it seems that fiddling with PP doesn't really help much. It's like Contact when they made Jodie Foster sit in that ridiculous safety chair with a harness, when all the while the aliens had prepared everything for her safe travel, no chair needed.

Curious to hear thoughts on this strategy and real-world examples of how it works. Interesting to read this thread because: * Although I bought my house in cash, I took out the first loan of my life, a home equity loan (is that what all this HELOC talk is?) last year for renovation. Nearly a total ...

Good luck, madbean, I hope it comes true! My dream job would probably be Tyler's job, industrial design, but for that I would need my dream brain. I thought gold was more to hedge vs cash, isn't it?

A loan, like tech said, does feel more like shorting cash than buying gold does in the sense that you're receiving "shares" (dollars in this case) on credit and buying them back later.

Stating the Obvious: War is Easier

Just throwing some ideas out there. I am not a big fan of the term military-industrial complex, but is it reasonable to say that the aerospace and armament industries do better if we have wars to fight or even to prevent? Tangentially, energy companies might also benefit. Since politics is entwined ...
