Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

Of course, what I really want to know: how is Smith1776's dating life? It's going! I've been going out on dates since you were last here. I haven't felt that "spark" with anyone in particular in the interim, but I've definitely learned to not get so attached on a given outcome for a relat...

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

I guess this thread a bit dormant, but I've been gone for three-is months. Reason: Nothing exciting, wanted to limit my internet time and getting too wrapped up in the news. Instead spent non-work time on what I'm calling a mini-retreat; meditation, Yoga, QiGong, a bit of exercise, ... Limiting Face...

Re: Another angle on the recent events in America and the world

Am I the only one here that thinks part of the reason the rioting has gotten so out of hand is bc of the Covid lockdown? I agree with Scott Adams that this has set the progress of Black back 10 years. But doesn't take much to make people snap under the conditions we've been under. I’m with you Pug....

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

The ideas to calm thing s.....

Don't equate peaceful protests with looting / rioting.

Police don't excelate peaceful protests.

Some protests doing better than others on social distancing and mask wearing.

Recognize that there are real grievances. Stop murdering black people.

If this worked, my avatar is the Avatar. (The last Airbender).

Watched it long ago with my kids. Now on Netflix.

I really enjoyed that show.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

I should really get on to reading the books. I feel like by reading the books I somehow would enjoy the movies less going forward though. I keep consistently hearing about how much better the books are than the movies. Mentally, I already get some of the "magic" of the movies ruined by we...

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

You're asking about the Two Towers movie, not the book? The book's description of that battle was incredibly detailed, and with Tolkein's attention to detail it's hard to spot any logical missteps. I didn't mind the movie's simplification of this part of the book, but you have to accept that a lot ...

Smith -- I'm just returning the productivity favor; your post/photo led me to those articles. :) There has got to be something in between in terms of detail and length, but haven't made the time to find. I watched a clip of the battle from the movie, and just thought, why did they wait until the Orc...

Re: What Does Life Look Like For You Now?

I do miss my uncle, my mom's brother. Otherwise known as the greatest man that ever lived. When I was a kid, my mom sent me to live with him for a few summers because she said that my step-dad would never be able to teach me to be a man. Brutal. I observant and did something about it. +1.

Re: What Does Life Look Like For You Now?

Huh, my biggest bodyweight-related problem has been going down 2 pant sizes in the past several months. This weekend I will re-acquaint myself with my grandmother's Singer sewing machine from the late 1950s. The diet is not really a diet anymore, it's all on autopilot. No tracking or charting of an...

GB-ish portfolio for retirement funds, starting in 2012(?).

I'd be better off financially if I hadn't back then, but I don't worry like I did in the last two big market downturns.

So, yeah. Doing what I hoped.

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

When I look around online I see that smoking in the US causes about 480,000 deaths annually. COVID-19 has killed about 88,000 in two months more or less, for an annualized rate of 528,000 deaths. And it looks like only about 14% of Americans smoke. Is it fair to say that the virus is about as dange...

Can we all agree that the virus will inevitably spread throughout the population until it "burns out" via herd immunity? <Snip> Take this example: a store selling mattresses. Mattresses aren't essential, right? You only buy them every 20 years or so, so a few months won't make a differenc...
