Re: Permanent Portfolio vs 60/40 1980 to 1998

The simplest answer is more stock...historically more stock equals more return with more volatility. The PP is an excellent hold on to what you have with a some growth portfolio. It is not a good grow what you have portfolio comparatively. PortfolioCharts makes it very easy to compare various portfo...

Re: PP Inspired Leveraged Portfolios

Not sure if I will posts stats but I flipped a large amount of a retirement account to 70% SCHR (ITTs) 20% TQQQ 10% UGLD. Accordingly, portfolio leverage is 160%. After a fair amount of analysis between ITTs and a STT/LTT mix I opted for simplicity as it really does not matter it seems which you go ...

Re: Treasurys for Sale

Details of how this is done at your brokerage should be available from them via a disclosure. Finding it may take some digging.

The main point to all of this is that bonds also have bid/ask spreads just like stocks, ETFs, futures, options etc. Some brokerages are more transparent about it.

Re: MMT

I think the main thing is we live in a digital world now and our money really is 0s and 1s tracked in a bunch of ledgers. I don't see that changing unless life as we know it ends or something else replaces the digital age.

I wouldn’t worry anymore than you would worry about a spread when selling an ETF.

Re: Treasurys for Sale

I can guarantee you, if you are selling a bond before maturity you are paying a spread even if it is not visible to you. For those with larger accounts, commissions are usually not your largest cost of trade.

Re: Treasurys for Sale

Secondary market you can buy and sell at will. So while you can buy on the primary market via your broker or TDirect, you can only sell early via the secondary market with a spread/and maybe a commission before maturity. If you buy on TD you have to wait until maturity or transfer the bills/notes to...

Main disadvantage...a small spread you will pay both ways and potentially a commission to pay

Main advantage...you can sell them before they mature

Agree with the lazy approach. My solution is a STT fund. You are always going to get the X yr average of the funds target.

There is a lot written on this and many options. I think the consensus is to simply top up the asset below 25%.

I don’t chose to live my life that way, but while we are throwing out anecdotes 1000s of Jews lined themselves up to emigrate to Shanghai and were doing great...until the Japanese arrived.

Call me super skeptical when it comes to the “oh, hey I’ll just get me some physical gold in another country and move there when the too ugly here line has been crossed” plan. Way easier said then done...if you are really serious about that plan, you should be well along the process of trying to get...

Grant was magnanimous at a personal level, but he had no love for the ideals of slavery or the people who favored them by the time the civil war ended. The war changed him and Lincoln, it made them LESS tolerant of slavery. The latter part of the quote was my intent for posting. Bad is bad and the s...

I’m a retired military guy and I have a seriously difficult time with the confederate and nazi flag thing regardless of someone having served or not...probably more so. It’s like a giant bird finger. The very first investing book I ever read was the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, Buffet’s mentor, which has a section IIRC correctly concerning someone who just doesn’t want to get into value investing/do the work etc. For this kind of investor he recommended a 50/50 stock/bond portfolio.....

I was a volunteer, that led volunteers, who mostly did a good job, who mostly loved this country.

I would guess close to 0% of modern fighting men (I'm early 30s) would carry that Zippo; they would feel disgraced by it.
