Re: Universities and the effective age of majority

I think it starts much earlier. Because children of 5 to 10 are deemed incapable of any responsibility at all, it is then a big ask to get adults as teenagers. In the UK in the 1970s most children (from age 5) used to walk by themselves to and from school and to and from after-school or weekend acti...

Re: UK gold in ISA

I've also got an XO ISA with phau and sgln.

XO seems very user friendly for a UK HBPP ISA.

I use tr68 3 1/2% 2068 for the bonds by the way and XO is fine for that too.

BBC radio gold program

I thought this was an interesting discussion program http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b051vvgt It's soft, shiny and rare. A symbol of love, of power, of wealth - gold has been prized for thousands of years, its value rises and falls as the economies round it fluctuate. Yet there's only a limited supp...

Re: Why Your Workout Should Be High-Intensity

How many miles do marathon runners typically run in training and in the actual event? For the elite, 126-135 miles per week in training  :o http://www.trainingarunner.com/2014/10/09/mo-farahs-typical-weekly-training-schedule/ Below is the typical weekly training schedule for Mo Farah. This involves...

Re: What happened to the tiny farming town where everyone got free money?

Cool. Guess the MMT folks have a thing to model their Job Guarantee after. Of course, them Canadians were a bunch of socialist commies.  ;D Actually I rather think the Job Guarantee advocates have a deep seated visceral hatred of the citizens' dividend advocates :) I think they are somewhat differe...

Re: The Cognitive Dissonace of Money

I love shoveling snow. I do our whole block and then some ( >100 homes). I'm excited when it starts snowing with the anticipation of some shoveling  :). No one else seems to shovel snow in England. On my drive to work, there is a part of Sheffield that has had all of the paths being total sheets of ...

Re: The Cognitive Dissonace of Money

I guess do what you enjoy. I love a bargin -cheapness is my weakness. Its a bit irrational. One thing that intrugues me though is that to have ever thought about something such as using the HBPP, entails an inconvenient sacrifice of valuable time for the sake of scrimping money. I found it hard to a...

author=MachineGhost link=topic=6814.msg112840#msg112840 date=1423100564 Running isn't a high intensity activity; its steady state aerobics B.S..  Steady state kills! Re: Why aren't there more Valves?

One thing that has struck me though is that several friends of mine who are obsessive rock climbers, pay a coach to tell them what to do for training. These people are obsessives who have read all of the latest training tips; they climb better than their coaches ever have. I've asked them if the coa...

Re: Why aren't there more Valves?

I was fascinated though to see something suggesting that perhaps the Valve type organisational structure was the original way for our earliest ancestors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadza_people#Social_structure The Hadza are organized into bands, called 'camps' in the literature, of typically 20–3...

Re: Why aren't there more Valves?

OK, I get that it's not for everybody, but, based on some things that people here write, I'd guess that such an arrangement would be highly preferred by more than 300 people in the whole country.  So why aren't there more Valves? There are a lot of single-person companies, which sort of by definiti...

Re: A step in the right direction for the RNC

I'd imagine it is very very difficult being an armed police officer (or anyone else having to use guns). Only if you are a very poor shot.  ;)  And, from my perspective, guns are a tool that can be used or misused according to the mental/emotional/physical acumen and stability of the user/abuser.  ...

Re: A step in the right direction for the RNC

What I find interesting is that Bryan Fischer is just as "forthright" in his opinions as Hitler was and yet (I hope) he isn't a real threat because he doesn't get support despite having a radio show. I guess there are thousands and thousands of people who are just as twisted as Hitler and yet thankf...

That Bryan Fischer has a wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryan_Fischer To avoid being classified as a hate group, the AFA has officially repudiated Fischer's views on Muslims, Native Americans, Hispanics, African Americans, The Holocaust being caused by homosexuals, the outlawing of homosexu...

To be clear here, I don't think it's really so much racism as it is culture-ism. Both white liberals and white conservatives like black people and hispanics who happen to share their interests, worldviews, preferred career fields, income bracket, level of education, religiosity, choice of vehicles,...

Re: Obama used the FDIC to bully legal businesses he doesn't like

One could say the same about state-run lotteries though.  I like to refer to them as a "stupidity tax."  Although I guess you could argue for them as a form of entertainment. Like you I'm no fan of state lotteries. In the UK, our national lottery seems to be an engine of cronyism, channeling funds ...

Re: Obama used the FDIC to bully legal businesses he doesn't like

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has acknowledged its role in Operation Choke Point and is taking dramatic steps to reverse its policies in targeting legal and legitimate industries that are disfavored by the Obama administration. It sounds a nightmarish example of abuse of bureaucratic power. I...

Re: 20% annual returns over 40 years...interested?

Kbg, I'm especially impressed at how the whipsaw chop of 2011 didn't do anything worse than simply make the 3x version less than 3x the 1xETF version (and so only "disapointing" if a better than 3x the 1xETF result was envisioned). But, do (would) the 3xETFs  in reality manage to track anything like...

Re: 20% annual returns over 40 years...interested?

Kbg, isn't it true that if the asset classes are keeping to a trend, then the (internally daily adjusted) 3xETFs + cash (so deleveraged to be back to 1x but not rebalanced every day) will out perform the 1xETF whilst if the asset classes are whipsawing, then the 3xETF + cash will suffer? Was mid 201...

Re: wealth of nations game

Perhaps I should have mentioned that the best strategy if there was only one player would be to have 100% socialization of the winnings. You'd steadily gain if you did that whilst without socialization, you'd lose essentially everything after a while (1.5x0.6=0.9<1). BUT clearly it becomes more comp...

wealth of nations game

Playing monopoly with my brother's children prompted me to dream up this game. It would only require some coins and a note book and could help make arithmetic fun for children to practice. It is a sort of "national fiscal policy game". I guess the aim is to entice wealthy residents into your country...

Re: Krugman's Take on Greece?

Has Prof. Krugman given a pronouncement on the new Greek government? It will be interesting to learn what he says. After all, the new Greek Prime Minister is an ideal Krugman candidate, as he keeps portraits of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in his office to serve as an inspiration as he proceeds to ...
