Re: Long bonds and a new, well off investor
My concern is that his holdout is based on a continued belief in market timing, but my thought in supporting DCA is that it would allow him to have a stake in all of the assets of the portfolio, and watch how they respond to the unexpected in the future with some skin in the game. Certainly, all in ...

Long bonds and a new, well off investor
I have a friend that has been following the PP for about a year, and while he has internalized the concepts, is still having a hard time buying long bonds. In all honesty, it is much easier for me to own them as part of my portfolio than it would be to buy all of them today. He is at present running...

Re: Anti-U.S. Protests in the Muslim World
I saw an article that indicated the movie seemed to focus relentlessly on Obama's use of the N-word in his autobiography. What I don't understand is why the anti-Obama crowd focuses on the fringes around his life - why not focus on his policy? With Bush, the left only had to focus on his policy, ...

I really enjoyed reading Brian Greene's book on this topic several years ago: http://www.amazon.com/The-Elegant-Universe-Superstrings-Dimensions/dp/0375708111/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top It might be tough sledding for those with a minimal science background, but is very clearly written and entertaining...

Re: Romney Picks Paul Ryan
Was Reagan a liar? Was Truman? Was Eisenhower? Was Lincoln? Was JFK? Were they all liars? Yes, absolutely. One cannot intentionally become politically successful in a democracy without being or becoming a liar, a panderer, or both. And the more power we're talking about, the truer this becomes. I s...

Foglifter, I use safety deposit boxes, and as MediumTex might say, sleep like a 14 year old house cat. There is some risk in every method of owning gold and I try to mitigate this with diversity.

Re: Mormonism - what you should know
It was the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in support of the then existing communist government, against Muslim rebels. The Soviets did not invade in order to support the existing government. Not unless you count using Spetsnaz shock troops to assassinate the Afghan president on day one as a show o...

Re: Mormonism - what you should know
And speaking of Afghanistan and presidential elections while the Olympics is underway I was reminded of something very interesting the other day about the 1980 Olympics. Jimmy Carter was president and we boycotted the Olympics that year. Does anybody remember why? Dispute involving the Soviet Union...

Re: "The problem is, choice can be a terrible thing."
My desire for choices is variable: gadgets, vacations, food...good. But if I am roped into a trip to pick out upholstery fabric with my wife, the myriad choices, and her thoroughness, suck the life force from my body.

Boomerang by Michael Lewis
I just finished this book, and wanted to recommend it to those of you that enjoyed "The Big Short". The author goes to Iceland, Greece, Germany, California, etc and talks to many of the involved parties in the economic crises. As always, he does it in an interesting, and easily understood fashion, w...

...well hopefully she invests that $3 million in the PP. I don't know. Her present strategy of marrying men with bad hearts and a proclivity for nontraditional coitus, while living in a state that rewards dubious lawsuits seems to be working pretty well. In fact this may be the ticket to portfolio ...

I have found that I tolerate lagging market returns in periods of stock out-performance much better than I tolerated the volatility of a stock heavy portfolio (the downward volatility, that is, had no problems with upward). That said, I can guarantee that we will have many more of these I'm done thr...

That's probably true, although I felt like I really had to earn my grades. Getting B's wasn't all that easy, let alone A's (didn't get too many of those). This seemed to be pretty common among my peers as well. Might just have been an engineering thing though. Seemed like my friends in business...

Gumby, Thank you for your patience and detailed answers. Forgive the simplicity of this observation. Given that debt has not been the magic elixir to prosperity in most countries, like those in Africa, might these observations be due to an effect, and not a cause? That a nation's ability to have a s...
