Re: Broken Promises Have Consequences: hundreds of thousands dead, no end in sight

Both US and Russia sucks - does that work ? However, in this war Russia sucks way more ;D Russia is only doing what the US would do if the shoe was on the other foot (i.e., if Russia was moving its missiles up to our borders), and yet Russia is the bad guy here? Very interesting analysis. I would w...

Broken Promises Have Consequences: hundreds of thousands dead, no end in sight

https://original.antiwar.com/Ted_Snider/2023/10/01/the-key-to-peace-in-ukraine-the-other-broken-nato-promise/ At some point Ukraine/NATO are going to have enough of the dying, and will ask Russia for peace. Russia is going to laugh at them, and ask why should we believe any promises you make in a p...

Re: Is Germany Getting Ready for Another Demagogue?

I'm not really concerned with why other countries are following the US. I am a US citizen. I have no control over what other countries do. The only country I have any influence in is the US, and I would like the US to stop trying to be the hegemon and start to realize that the world would be a bette...

Re: Is Germany Getting Ready for Another Demagogue?

You know what is the height of hypocrisy is the USA lecturing Putin about being a murderous thug for invading Ukraine. This is the USA that invaded Iraq supposedly because they had WMDs, which turned out surprise surprise to be false, and killing 500,000 Iraqis in the process. So, it's okay for us t...

Re: Is Germany Getting Ready for Another Demagogue?

Here's a short list of civilian deaths due to house fires, slipping in the shower, etc. (I'm sure none could be related to incendiary steel cylinders falling from US/NATO planes shortly before): 500,000 Germans, 1941 to 1945 1,000,000 Japanese, 1941 to 1945 2,000,000 Vietnamese, 1955 to 1975 500,000...

Chas Freeman, US Diplomat, on the Ukraine War

https://chasfreeman.net/the-many-lessons-of-the-ukraine-war/#_ftnref1 He says: "Every government that is a party to the Ukraine War – Kyiv, Moscow, Washington, and other NATO capitals – has been guilty of various degrees of self-deception and blundering misfeasance. Free Speech vs A Fist

Here's a great article about the stupidity of US foreign policy: [url]https://www.caitlinjohnst.one/p/modern-empire-apologia-is-mostly/url] She asks a great question. If I want to exercise my right to free speech by calling someone a racial epithet, should I be surprised when I get punched in the fa...

Is Germany Getting Ready for Another Demagogue?

Interesting article: https://www.other-news.info/the-wests-real-problem-isnt-going-to-be-russia-or-china-but-germany/ Suspicion of who destroyed Nordstream seems divided on either the US or Ukraine (with the US's help, no doubt). Either way, can you imagine the outrage in your home country if critic...

Re: TBonds saved me in 2008. Now, not sure what to do now.

Another thing is make sure to look at the overall performance of your total portfolio. Don't just look at one piece in isolation, but look at the whole thing. Then, compare it to some other portfolios like say the standard 60/40 stock/bond portfolio. You might find your portfolio hasn't done too bad...

USA Deliberately Slowed 1980s Japan Economy?

I came across an intriguing idea very recently, which had never occurred to me before. I'm curious to know if anyone else had ever heard this idea before? Maybe this was obvious to a lot of people before, and somehow I just never encountered this idea before. The idea is spelled out in this article:...

Dude, you need to lay off the propaganda, it's not helping your thinking skills. The eastern half of the Ukraine has been a Russian-speaking, Russian-leaning majority for hundreds of years. Putin didn't move any people in there to dominate anything. Please cite some credible sources if you believe o...

They lied about Afghanistan, they lied about Iraq, what else have they lied about:

I'm sure we could add a bunch of other things "they" lied about, like Vietnam, etc.

A fairly bleak picture that you present! He's a bully . . . From the perspective of the average working-class person in Russia, your statement above about bullies sounds a lot like the USA's hubristic behavior since the end of the cold war when they had promised that NATO wouldn't move one inch eas...

Re: Is This What Got Tucker Carlson Fired?

Which one of Fox or MSNBC is opposed to the US being heavily involved in Ukraine? Which of those two was opposed to the US invading Iraq in 2003 or whenever it was? I frankly can't remember, but I suspect they were both cheerleading for that fiasco and reporting breathlessly on the WMDs that the lyi...

Thank you to those who responded to my very broad question. I've read your responses and the materials you pointed me to, and my thinking is clearing up a little bit. Let me ask maybe a simpler question: Is there any general correlation between the strength of the US dollar and the returns that a US...

Re: Hedging Against U.S. Dollar Losing Global Reserve Status

It's a good point. If you test it at portfoliovisualizer.com, you'll see that 50/50 stocks/gold from 1976 to 2022 did do a little worse than 60/40 stocks/bonds, but 50/50 stocks/gold did about the same as 50/50 stocks/bonds. There's really nothing wrong with a 50/50 stocks/gold portfolio.

Re: Hedging Against U.S. Dollar Losing Global Reserve Status

No, I wouldn't feel comfortable with 50/50 stocks/gold. I need some cash to feel comfortable. This discussion has inspired me to come up with a couple more alternative retirement portfolios: Option 1: 25% total US stock market 25% small-cap value US stocks 25% gold 25% short-term Treasuries Option 2...

Re: Hedging Against U.S. Dollar Losing Global Reserve Status

It seems there's a difference of opinion on whether foreign stocks are a good idea for a US investor in my shoes. I'll have to think more about that. I have a home-country bias, but I'm not completely opposed to foreign for a diversification benefit. Here is what I'm thinking of shifting toward in t...

Seajay, thank you for your excellent comments. I found them very helpful, and I share many of your views. You mentioned investing in US land/home, global stocks, and gold. As a followup question, what about US bonds or global bonds? Did the prudent British investor have any of his/her money in bonds...
