Re: Oh how it hurts to see no gains
It did? Google Finance shows the following for a 4x25 PP and a 50/50 split of VTI and SHY today: TLT +1.57 (1.38%) VTI -1.19 (-1.41%) SHV 0.00 (0.00%) GLD +0.29 (0.21%) Average: +0.045 All depends on when you rebalanced last, but I'm guessing most PP holders are a bit overweight stocks and underwei...

Re: Oh how it hurts to see no gains
So, stocks fell 1.5%. Gold and Treasuries have experienced larger daily declines YTD. My PP still lost money today.Libertarian666 wrote: Isn't it odd how no one is complaining today?

What does this mantra mean to you? I'm curious to know how others have internalized this often quoted statement.

Re: Taxable PP and 35% Re-balance Band
If you hit a band, IMHO you should just rebalance and get it over with. We all dislike and work to minimize Uncle Sam's bite, but capital gains taxes from selling appreciated investments in taxable accounts is just a fact of life. Consider how fortunate you are to have sufficient investments that y...

Re: Taxable PP and 35% Re-balance Band
I currently have an investment in IT-TE municipal bonds that I can exchange to rebalance lagging assets when an upper band is breached. I can do this once, but this plan of rebalancing will not scale as the amount invested grows. It appears as if I will at some point have to realize capital gains in...

Re: Taxable PP and 35% Re-balance Band
This looks like a less viable option as larger portfolios require a significant influx of new funds to rebalance. Does it ever make sense to not rebalance the portfolio at all?

Re: Taxable PP and 35% Re-balance Band
What options are available to a taxable PP investor when an asset reaches 35% of the portfolio? I am primarily interested in minimizing taxes but still stay within the 15/35 bands. I also have cash outside of the portfolio if required. I'm sure there are several options and I am interested in how o...

Re: Permanent Portfolio
The title of the show says it all...the money you CAN afford to lose. On a side note, does anyone listen to Bill Gunderson of Bill Gunderson Capital Management (1220 AM, purely entertainment)? He promotes value, momentum and performance investing. I wonder what his track record is and whether its co...

Re: GDX or GLD in VP?
The miners sure are volatile. What exactly is driving this recent rally in gold miners and precious metals? Doesn't the possibility of fed tightening and rising interest rates negatively impact the future prospects for these asset classes?

Re: Permanent Portfolio
It's not that you are becoming a broken record so much as I don't understand why you don't just move to a 60/40 allocation if you think it would allow you to sleep better at night. At the risk of me sounding like a broken record I will say again that the PP shouldn't give you heartburn, and it soun...

Re: Permanent Portfolio
budd, Why does it matter what any other portfolio is doing? Shouldn't the PP be judged based upon its own objectives (i.e., low drawdowns and positive inflation-adjusted long term returns)? There is a difference between turning a blind eye and not looking at your portfolio dozens of times a day. F...

Re: Permanent Portfolio
I believe we should face the fact that the portfolio is performing sub-par. But it's NOT performing sub-par. It's just that the stock market is currently performing better, just like gold and bonds have sometimes performed better than the overall PP in recent years. If the PP went up every single d...

Re: Permanent Portfolio
Why wouldn't someone want to stay the course? I guess I don't follow the fundamental premise of all of these PP angst threads. Are we really that rattled over a 2% or so fluctuation in value when the only way to have avoided it would have been to have magical powers that none of us has? The basic a...

Re: Oh how it hurts to see no gains
Pug, are your PP investments in a taxable account or gold holdings physical? If they are not, I too am interested in the rationale for exceeding the upper bands without rebalancing. You have a point with respect to a 1-2% decline, but others have an emotional attachment to their finances (healthy or...

Re: Taxable PP and 35% Re-balance Band
On a sizable portfolio, the tax implications of selling to 25% are substantial. What are the mechanics of offsetting gains with losses? Can someone illustrate with an example? Assume equities hit 35%, gold and treasuries at 20% each.

Re: Rebalancing triggered?
I think what Xan is suggesting is that rather than rebalance to 25% each every time your cash hits 35% (because you're adding cash), you might let the cash build up outside of your PP (until there's enough that the commissions are not an annoyingly large percentage) and then add in such a way as to...

Re: Oh how it hurts to see no gains
Perhaps you should check more often so that you can empathize with those of us that are concerned. If you look once or twice per year and the portfolio is down 15-20%, what, if any, action would you take? I am concerned that I would capitulate.

Re: Oh how it hurts to see no gains
Today was also particularly brutal because of the wicked 180 degree turn the market took after about 10:15am. Can't say I've had many top-10 best performance days reverse into top-10 worst performance days in such short order. But yeah Budd, at least today 100% stocks is faring worse than the PP. P...
