Re: PP and expected asset class returns
I'm with ochotona on this one. Predictions are pretty much useless, no matter what the source. The whole point of the PP is that you don't have to predict or worry about the future of any asset. If you've been selling into these rallies, you have plenty of cash to gobble up the assets that end up de...

Re: Benefits of State Marriage
This link is from an Ex- Marine detailing the Marriage Contract and its issues DO NOT listen if you cannot tolerate bad/rough language, however his description of a "State Marriage Contract" is very concise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pCHZuErZCM Is it true what he states about Marriage Laws i...

Re: TD Ameritrade changing commission-free ETFs
After some serious thought, I'm sticking with TD Ameritrade and my iShares ETFs for now in both my taxable and non-taxable accounts, despite the loss of being commission-free. They're solid funds and that's worth a lot to me. If the new State Street funds can gather some serious support, I may enter...

Re: Where are you invested in gold?
For me it was a choice between GLD and IAU, since they were, and still are, the two big dogs for Gold ETFs. IAU's superior ER made it an easy choice.
I'd own some physical gold if I felt I could secure it soundly with little cost, but that's not my current situation.

Re: TD Ameritrade changing commission-free ETFs
Actually, after taking a look at the overlap in these State Street funds, I don't like the looks of them... Here's the MidCap (SPMD) vs. SmallCap (SPSM)... 737 overlapping constituents... 74% of the ones in SPMD also reside in SPSM!

Re: TD Ameritrade changing commission-free ETFs
For someone that normally makes many many many small purchases of commission-free ETFs each month, a $6.95 fee seems like much more of a barrier than it may seem to others that only incur a fee once every few months or longer. I liked to nibble all month as I transferred money into my accounts each ...

Re: TLO symbol changed to SPTLO
This thing has me pretty upset. They sent me an email this morning touting how they were expanding their commission-free ETF lineup. Looking into it, all of my commission-free ETFs I use are getting cut.... TLT, IVV, IJH, IJR. Even the popular ones I used in the past... SHY, VTI, VNQ, BND, AGG, etc...

Re: TLO symbol changed to SPTLO
Probably related: TDAmeritrade has increased its lineup of commission-free ETFs from around 100 to almost 300. Unfortunately, they are eliminating Vanguard and the common State Street funds like TLT and replacing them with more thinly traded offerings, but with lower expense ratios. old list of com...

Re: Rebalancing - General Advice
I agree with the above posts that rebalancing is more about what works for you instead of something being the "best". What bands worked in the past may or may not be optimum for future moves. I, personally, like to be pretty close to my asset allocation at all times. I won't go crazy with my buying ...

Re: The GOLD scream room
As you know I've been selling gold for SCV as mentioned above. I don't want to have to manage the portfolio this closely but you can see the money coming out of gold and treasuries so visibly its almost foolish to just let it be... Then close your eyes and don't let your pattern seeking and emotion...

Re: The GOLD scream room
Instead, while I am upset at how fast these gains are evaporating (what's new?!), the stock portion mutes the fall. I feel the same way. It's beautiful how they all seem to mute each other's declines. Gold just stirs up too much emotion for me. Do the exact opposite of what you think you should do ...

Re: New Here - I want to make sure I got the basics!
Not many of our peers talk about their stock holdings at the cocktail parties like you used to hear about. But they might be beating the PP by just paying down their student loans. You do have a point. I only have a few friends that talk to me about holdings. I'm honestly shocked by how many middle...

Re: New Here - I want to make sure I got the basics!
1. Given my age of mid-20's, would the permanent portfolio's focus on capital preservation grow my assets during my accumulation years too slowly? In other words, should I take on more risk (say a standard vanilla 80/20 portfolio), given the amount of time I have until retirement. I may be thinking...
