I tried once and failed -- thanks for making me feel bad!
Not sure what happened, but it grew a green shoot up, but didn't actually grow the garlic cloves. Haven't tried since!

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I can’t hoard wine because I find it easy to keep drinking once I start. I get "lucky" in that anything above 2 glasses and I have a bad hangover, so I've learned the hard way to stop myself. It means that my g/f and I will mildy hurt if we finish a bottle together, but never go beyond th...

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I like a nice aviation cocktail. Sadly, there is no alcohol in the house this week. That's an emergency!!!! Gotta do something about that right now! This is where us wine snobs come out ahead. We continually hoard, but it's called "collecting" or "aging wine". Our household is g...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion
I'm looking for a new pug, but there aren't many rescues in the Midwest. Lots in TX for some reason, but that would be tough logistically. They don't do Door Dash for shelter dogs. Some rescues will relay dogs across the country to get them to a good home. Depends on how eager they are to get the d...

Re: Keep Supporting Your Local Restaurants
We ordered delivery from our local fine-dining steakhouse last night (it was our anniversary) and also got a $150 gift card to help them with cash flow. Also ordered + picked up some wine from the local wine shop today. Trying to do our part as you say, Tortoise. Plus, it helps keep our stocks of gr...

Re: Everyone should have some cash in their local bank
I was thinking the same thing. Spreading cash out amongst banks, and moved a chunk to the local Credit Union that I usually just use for everyday banking (but keep a small balance).
Not that I use much cash when sitting on the couch at home all day....every day....sigh.

REI, the Kent, Wash., based adventure gear company said Sunday it will close all 162 of its retail stores nationwide from March 16-27. REI plans to pay all store employees during the closure and cover shipping for online orders while stores are closed Another local business closing but continuing t...

Yeah, the hospitals around here started cancelling elective surgeries at the end of this past week.
To be honest, I'd cancel my own surgery at this point, as I wouldn't want to be confined to a place with all the sick people and a weakened system.

I won’t put a lot of money in the pp at this point ....we saw the same drops in gold ,long term treasuries and equities last week and all for different reasons . I believe gold and long term treasuries are headed for a lot of pain once this fear pulls back and equities are at lower prices ....they ...

Re: Extension of Digital Divide?
That's an interesting thought, though I'm not sure the conclusion is obvious. Around here, many who are hourly/can't do their jobs remotely are being paid to simply not work. Those who can work from home are, and those who can't are just told to stay home, but the companies are still paying them (wh...

Re: Logistics in the coronavirus pandemic
Having said all that, I am something of a prepper myself due to our earthquake risk here in Vancouver. Which I think is very real and something that is very reasonable to plan for. Should the situation somehow turn extreme, we should be okay here in my household. I think there's an important distin...

Re: Logistics in the coronavirus pandemic
You may be right. I don't have the answer to that question. But whatever they can contribute will help at least a little. I also expect that the interstate highway system will be restricted to essential freight , truck drivers to be conscripted for such freight, and speed limits on the interstates ...

With the reduced travel and traffic, I would think freight moves faster on the highways these days anyway. Is relaxing those protections actually required?

If the loans are government-backed, would this be all that different than forgiveness? Taxpayers still take the loss, vs the educational institution or lender.

Fiscal stimulus in response to corona virus
Forking this thread off the Corona virus thread... Another great article by Dalio published this week: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/we-need-coordinated-monetary-fiscal-stimulus-counteract-ray-dalio/?published=t&mc_cid=2445095bbe&mc_eid=ded4b883a5 I'd be curious to debate this part of the a...

Seems like a lot better plan than buying "FDIC-backed" 5 year CDs, as some on this forum have recommended. I'm not sure what I've missed, but my CDs are doing fine, earning their 3% interest. And I could break them tomorrow and have the cash in my account in a few days, less 6 months inte...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion
I'll take the consequences of liquidity over the consequences of austerity in a liquidity squeeze any day. Even if it means breaking our republic? IMO principles do matter. In terms of short-term pain, perhaps the liquidity is preferable, but if it moves us away from a republic and into oligarchy w...
