Re: The GOLD scream room
Instead, while I am upset at how fast these gains are evaporating (what's new?!), the stock portion mutes the fall. I feel the same way. It's beautiful how they all seem to mute each other's declines. Gold just stirs up too much emotion for me. Do the exact opposite of what you think you should do ...

Re: New Here - I want to make sure I got the basics!
Not many of our peers talk about their stock holdings at the cocktail parties like you used to hear about. But they might be beating the PP by just paying down their student loans. You do have a point. I only have a few friends that talk to me about holdings. I'm honestly shocked by how many middle...

Re: New Here - I want to make sure I got the basics!
1. Given my age of mid-20's, would the permanent portfolio's focus on capital preservation grow my assets during my accumulation years too slowly? In other words, should I take on more risk (say a standard vanilla 80/20 portfolio), given the amount of time I have until retirement. I may be thinking...

This should be interesting... called it, btw. Never interfere with a government's ability to control currency within its borders.

Re: The Google memo firestorm
It's an interesting read for sure. I disagree with his suggestion about de-emphasizing empathy. The world already has an acute lack of empathy. So many people are deeply concerned with themselves with very little regard to others. I'm convinced this problem is getting worse each year.

Re: Selling Restricted Stock
Your 3rd reason (leveraging your employment) is the main reason I would be looking to sell. Even if you didn't have a downpayment needed for a home, it would still be wise to diversify those holdings. If the tax was deferred until the sale of the stock, I might hesitate a bit and calculate the true ...

Re: Asset Allocation Ideas when you have a Mortgage
It's probably easiest & safest to consider your home a consumption item rather than an investment. You can't liquidate it easily, you'll always need someplace to live, and you definitely can't liquidate part of it e.g. you can't just sell the driveway. It's more like your car than your brokerag...

Re: Bitcoin Costs More than Gold?
Interesting read. Damn that board looks young! That's a really sad read. Pump and dump early adopters are the real winners here. Greedy fools will be the losers. I suppose that's the way with most things. Everyone is trying to get the most happiness they can given their limited resources in life. S...

Re: Bitcoin Costs More than Gold?
I get the sneaking suspicion that once Bitcoin becomes sufficiently large enough, the US Government will make it officially illegal. This may not stop its use entirely, but it will almost entirely halt its use by corporate entities as an acceptable form of payment, which would be devastating enough...

Re: GenX 7% in Gold?
GenX goes to age 56? That's my age. I used to think of myself as a Late Boomer Wikipedia says 1961 to 1981. Seems a lot broader than I would have guessed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_X Edit: There seems to be a lot of looseness with the years depending on the source, so never mind the ...

Re: GenX 7% in Gold?
I'm a GenX-er. I have a little more than 21% in Gold. It's technically a broad age range: 36 to 56 roughly, at the moment. I wouldn't imagine many at the lower end to hold any gold, while the older ones probably hold a decent amount.

Re: Help get me reduce some weight
Cut soda, even diet soda. Replace with tea and organic raw honey. Cut flour and sugar (naturally occurring sugar in foods is ok). I mentioned soda first because I think it drives the body into consuming more food. I believe it has to do with the sweeteners used. Even stevia makes me more hungry, and...

Re: Real Assets vs. Financial Assets
That chart in the link was very interesting. I think the one aberration would be real estate. I know for my market, along with other large coastal cities, prices are inflated beyond pre-great recession levels and the market is still somewhat frenzied for single family homes, where most of the homes ...
