Pretty cool.

(I used to shop at Sainsbury's when I lived in London. They had pigeon meat!)

Re: How much do you spend a month?

If I may be nosy, Barrett, is your food bill high from eating out or just from buying quality or organic produce? My experience has been that the Asian markets are always cheaper. In my household, I'm the one who drives up the food bill. 1) I'm the one who likes to eat out at nice places. 2) I buy q...

Re: short bonds - how to buy them

If there is little or no advantage to the primary auction, why not just buy on the secondary? I'd say, unless you are going for institutional diversification by going to Treasury Direct, forget about the primary auctions. Some people just like that "new bond smell" from brand new bonds bought at au...

Re: How much do you spend a month?

About US$2,000 in credit cards and I'll have to get back to you on the cash transactions and some utilities that don't let me use a card.
I expect the total will turn out to be about $3K/month.

Re: Flu Vaccines: Scam Central

Well, even a website called Vitamin D council dot com says: Having high levels of vitamin D may help you to recover faster from an influenza infection, although we don’t know for sure yet if they do. Some researchers recommend getting more vitamin D to protect against influenza. Still, more experime...

Yeah, the whole point, I thought, was inner volatility (individual assets) but outer calm (whole package).

The PP is like a student that gets D's on all of his tests and then gets an A on the final exam to average a C+. Down, down, down, and then an up day to squash the shorts. It's going to give everything back from Friday. Garbage. No, no, no. The PP is like a student that gets average grades but beco...

HBR, I learned so much from your post. Sometimes we forget how easy we have it these days with regard to both access to investments and low-fee options. In 1967 I bought British Sovereigns at the coin and stamp desk of a major department store (Wannamakers) in Philadelphia for less than a 10% premiu...

I don't think it's any big secret that melveyr is Ryan Melvey, who blogs (only occasionally at this point) at stableinvesting.com.  As it turns out (also not any big secret) he's really, really young (maybe 23 now).  My guess is he'll eventually end up at some hedge fund, like maybe Bridgewater. .....

Re: The GOLD scream room

Gold swings so much that the only way I can hold it is physical. I like being able to look into my locker and say.  Why yes, there are 10 gold coins.  And last year there were 10 gold coins.  Maybe next year, I'll buy another coin and there will be 11. I think of gold as 10,000 years of history whe...

Re: Midterm Election Central-Should We Send Obama A Message?

Obama just gave his long winded post mortem press conference and was more arrogant and intransigent than ever. He will not admit that it was his policies which were repudiated by the electorate. This is going to be an ugly two years but its worth it if some of his policies are stymied. Dad, is that...

Re: The GOLD scream room

It's hard to keep buying when the price just keeps going down but it makes more sense than chasing performance after the price has already risen. I find it easier to buy stocks when they're down because of my strong belief, even if it may be erroneous, that stocks will recover several times in my l...

Re: New V-PP with Consumer Staples instead of broad market?

since the broad stock market has gone up quite a bit If you're going to tinker, I think Harry went in the other direction before he settled on the S&P or a total market index for stocks. That is, he selected some aggressive growth funds for maximum volatility. Still, you never know how far the mark...
