Re: What have we learned over last 10 years?

I think the PP is behaving pretty closely to how it's supposed to theoretically. The one asset I'm not so sure about is gold. I'd have to go back and reread the gold section of "Best Laid Plans" to see if I'm missing/not remembering something. One simple example; in theory gold should not ...

Re: Time to Return to the Gold Standard?

bit, Based on your answers, overall, I believe our thoughts are pretty similar on the technical points. As mentioned earlier, I'm not a Bitcoin hater it just is not widely accepted and therefore is not a good form of money right now. While the ARPANet map is interesting, it also makes my point. The ...

I forgot to address any of your other issues, yes I did. I'll concede every one of them. However, this is a thread about what is "good money" not what we wish was good money and the most important feature of any form of money is that it is widely accepted for just about every form of comme...

Re: Time to Return to the Gold Standard?

Linking to a list of Bitcoin Forks without any context and somehow implying it as "a burn" doesn’t add value to the conversation. Anyone remotely familiar with Bitcoin is aware of such forks. The question for you is, why are forks "bad"? How are Bitcoins technical or economical ...

Re: Time to Return to the Gold Standard?

Most of my reading on Bitcoin indicates there isn't a ton of interest in it for monetary purposes. Think about it...banks transfer gobs of money securely every day. Of course theft happens physically and electronically but we've all read about multiple bitcoin bank heists so personally I also don't ...

Re: Time to Return to the Gold Standard?

It might be simpler to forget gold/bitcoin, and first wonder what would happen if the Fed disabled their (digital) printing press Indeed. I've mentioned this elsewhere but I think it would be interesting to fast forward 50-100 years to see what becomes standard monetary theory. The former theory is...

Re: Time to Return to the Gold Standard?

1. I'm saying inflation does not of itself discourage savers unless a positive real rate of return is not achievable. No doubt negative real rates do happen from time to time and that does tend to discourage saving (or so we thought...but now we have negative yielding sovereign bonds.) 2. "Resp...

Re: Time to Return to the Gold Standard?

Tn, How is it stolen and to whom do the benefits and costs go from inflation? ANSWER: Inflation steals from savers .....it discourages saving as the dollar becomes worth less over time....therefore encouraging spending, investing & debt....therefore "benefiting" the economy and punish...

Re: Gold backed blockchain

What's the point, seriously? Gold is physical, meaning you can go count the stuff, it fills actual space, has actual volume, has a measurable weight to it. Digital things are not, meaning they can be copied/reproduced easily. Blockchain simply makes reproduction of the original MUCH more difficult. ...

A lot of blocking forever going on lately on this board. I felt pretty cool earlier this week when I got blocked by someone for the first time ever. I think there is so much dishonesty when it comes to pensions. I’ll mention a couple thoughts for my area of work. The military is a young persons profession by and large. After WW2 the system was revamped to force people out at younger ages based on rank. Heart attacks and strokes were a very commo...

You are incorrect on gold ETFs (or the vast majority of ETFs for that matter). ETFs have a feature that allows very large investors to create and destroy shares in exchange for the underlying. So if their price disconnects substantially from the underlying they can exercise this option and pocket th...

Step 1: paper/etf or physical. This is complex and ultimately personal preference. Spend most study time here. Step 2 if paper (my choice): A mix of liquidity, spread and mngt fee that is driven by personal circumstances and associated trade offs. For me I started with GLD and now am in SGOL. Step 2...

Markets are down greatly in the past few days. A trade deal with China is in jeopardy. N Korea launched 2 missiles today. We're sending B52s and a carrier fleet towards Iran.
