I got notice of a dividend as well. Don't recall getting these in the past (held CEF for many many years now), but my memory is also quite poor on such things

Re: New vehicle recommendations
Glad to hear everyone's okay! One suggestion I'll throw out based on your criteria: Subaru Forester. Incredibly utilitarian, really safe (go read up on some of the Subaru forums and you can see the types of horrible accidents folks are able to "walk away" from), decent MPG, very reliable. Can get a ...

And this is why it's nice to have an asset allocation where you feel comfortable shrugging and say "eh...it'll work out"*
* (Of course, it may not actually work out. But this AA makes me far less stressed with any movement in any one or two asset classes)

Things have dropped quite a bit in the past few weeks (gold, treasuries, bonds). Seems like a better time to move out of cash than it was two weeks ago at least no?

Re: Where should I open new Roth IRA accounts
Look at what Reub went through... he's damn lucky he didn't lose his gold via theft, oversight or what not. Can you provide a link to this story? A quick search didn't turn up anything. I'm skeptical of banks/safe deposit boxes as well, but do have/use one as part of a physical diversification plan.

Re: Bullion Vault
For me there's value in the possibility of traveling to another country and "withdrawing" my gold, vs trying to travel with it (imagine Hillary gets elected and you want to GTFOOD). I'm sure there are other (possibly better? curious to hear) ways of having this option, and maybe it's an option I'll ...

I like that approach! The downside, of course, is that the sale of TLT may be taxable, depending on how the market moves and how long you hold.

That does not match my understanding, so I'm curious to know what specifics make you believe that. Seattle, huh? Have you read The Really Big One thread? :-\ I did. Luckily I'm East of I-5, so I at least have a chance! But you need to get what's called "slow bolt" cilantro so you can get more out of it before it flowers. I picked up a packet from Seeds of Change at Home Depot: http://www.seedsof...

Herbs such as basil and cilantro also have lots of flavor. Man, my cilantro (not grown hydroponically) bolted pretty much right out of the gate here in the PacNW. Perhaps user error, but c'mon, it's Seattle....it doesn't get *that* hot. My lettuce appears to be feeding some population of insects, b...

If measured in USD, sure. But in local currency you should. And presumably local currency is what one is most concerned with?Ad Orientem wrote: So if your local non USD currency sees a sudden spike in inflation, gold may not react in the violent way that it does when the Dollar is weak.

Many folks here seem focused on the cost to the company (rightly so), but as someone choosing to be childless, I struggle with paid leave policies as I don't get extra paid "vacation". It's a benefit that only mothers and fathers get, and the rest of us actually have to work 48 weeks a year (depend...

Re: Permanent portfolio accumulation and capital addition
In a year that I can make regular contributions, it feels weird to buy assets and then think about selling them so soon. And, if I contribute too much too often, I feel I may "dilute" the mix so that one asset doesn't really have a chance to rise to that 35% band. This has been in my mind recently ...

Re: Is American Olive Oil About to Have Its Moment?
A restaurant near us has olive oil we've really enjoyed with bread. When I asked, the server shared it's Corto, from California.
No clue if the olives/oil comes from the company mentioned in the initial article, but it's very tasty, and you can find it on Amazon.

The future is starting took more and more like Existenz than Star Trek . :( Wow, I didn't realize that was a well known movie. Yes and no.
Yes because my current PP investments are doing well. No because I have more money I'd like to move into the PP, but not thrilled about doing it at near-highs for the assets :/
(clearly I'll never be happy)
