Re: Are most people here sticking with Treasuries?

Whew, that was an interesting 10 pages! I think people are in much better moods when the markets, and treasuries, and gold are up! Not due to thinking about interest rates going up, but rather wanting to start selling puts, I sold virtually all my TLT and stock holdings in early Jan. That turned out...

Corto I would also say .25% of yield is worth one more month duration for me.

Also my experience is a CD wouldn't be as liquid if you did want sell early. The spread on selling CD would eat into profits.
Thanks!

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

In a tax deferred IRA account, is there any reason I would not buy a 3 month CD vs. a 3 month Treasury? See the clip of rates. The higher rate on the Treasury is because maturity date is closer to end of Jan 2023, so closer to 4 months vs. 3. If I look at Treasury maturity dates in the range of the ...

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

Well, TLT is a good example, yes. So this is where I get lost. Two scenarios: 1) I buy a 30 year bond from treasury direct. 30 years from now I get my original principal plus whatever interest along the way. 2) I buy an equivalent $ amount of TLT. What am I getting in 30 years? Since they have to co...

Tyler (as usual) has a thoughtful essay on the pros and cons of TIPS in Portfolio Charts. https://portfoliocharts.com/2022/09/27/all-about-tips-real-returns-and-inflated-expectations/#takeaways Perfect! Wish I was able to read that earlier this year before putting a bunch into DIPSX (inflation prot...

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

God I am so waffling here! --Excited about treasury and CD returns! --But those are likely to be short lived because we are going to dump into a recession and Fed will need to ease again! --So wait for one or two more rate hikes and then put some money into an income annuity to lock it the higher pa...

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

Vinny, exactly why I am on a t bill topic!

Always thinking of safety.

Assuming social security is still good when I hit 70, we easily live on that , and it gets inflation adjustments.

so I am more focusing on the 10 years between 60 and 70 and realizing I can probably do it without an annuity.

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

That last comment by Kevin is where I am at too.

So I buy, say, 10 year Tips. With a sub 2% base rate. And inflation is non existent.

Is that not like having my money in a savings account paying 2% or so interest nowadays?

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

Corto, I buy Treasury bills, but only after I have completely maxed out my annual purchases of I-bonds. I hold short duration T-bills to maturity so I know their precise yield when I buy them. As you have discovered, investors cannot buy tax deferred T-bills through TreasuryDirect. I do not buy TIP...

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

Anyway, I think you'll be happy with Fidelity. I sure am and it's only been like 12 hours. I like that they have a cash management account that I can treat like a bank too. And I am sure I will like their Full View which will let me view my other non-Fidelity accounts, vs. needing to use Mint. All ...

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

Yikes. Fidelity it is! Thanks. And an FYI, I opened 3 accounts, and already am able to navigate, and was able to add beneficiaries to our joint account. And I can buy 3.45% 3 month CDs in my freaking IRA! If I was able to do that at Ally, it is completely convoluted. Glad looking at bonds forced thi...

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

What things do you not like? They have a joint account that need beneficiaries assigned, but have some rule or reason against being able to do that, or any kind of transfer on death. There doesn't seem to be any easy way around it other than making two individual accounts and splitting the money.

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

I opened accounts at Fidelity and am starting the transfer process. $100 cash bonus for each account, which I won't complain about. My in-laws use Vanguard and I help them from time to time. Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

Ally, Fidelity: $1 per bond commission if you’re just talking t-bills, Fidelity should be free. I think the $1 per bond is for CDs and non-treasury bonds. https://www.fidelity.com/trading/commissions-margin-rates You are correct, thanks! Any opinions out there on Fidelity vs. Schwab vs. Vanguard? S...

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

So I'm trying to decide mentally if that $1 is worth moving my accounts for? With a face value of $1000 per bill, if I trade $100k of 13 week t-bills, that's $100 commission every 13 weeks. $100k of 13 week bills will payout (math ok?) about .0313/4*100k = $782.50 in a 3 month period. And I will los...

Quick survey:

Ally, Fidelity: $1 per bond commission
Vanguard, Schwab: $0 per bond

Both for both new and secondary issues.

Re: PP YTD performance - was it the worst ever?

Thanks, barrett!

I did max out i-bonds in January, and will again this coming Jan.

I am making it a priority to understand bonds more in the coming weeks. While I am very happy with 2.75% in savings, if I can get more in bills and notes, and have them exempt from state tax, no reason not to!

Curious what you do with any cash you have specifically in cash, but not necessarily immediately needed? I've got a bunch in a savings account paying 2.75% currently. Re: PP YTD performance - was it the worst ever?

Oops, you're right, I was looking at the wrong entry.

In any event, my family and my wife's are long lived -- her grandmothers made it to 92 and 100, and both sets of our parents are still around, late 80s/early 90s.

I have a mental need to protect against that, and open to almost all options!
