HB stated in his radio show, the reason he chose Gold is that it is the second most popular form of money after the USD. Re: PP Mistakes

What were your biggest Permanent Portfolio mistakes? Hmm.... Thinking that Gold in an Australian PP would perform in the same manner as Gold in a US PP. 1. Recommend holding US assets as well for non-US PP holders. 2. If I knew of the PP concept when I was young, then hold Shares/Gold and gradually...

Re: What to do with a Low-Yielding 30-Year Bond

Good advice from Sophie IMHO.... Maddy - if you want to switch to a Desert Portfolio-like structure (30% stocks, 10% gold except I'd recommend closer to 20%, and the rest in a 10 year Treasury ladder), you'd be fine over the long run and it might be much simpler to deal with. Alternatively, consider...

While we are on the topic is surprises me that we don't have more members of this forum that are gamers, given that it seems like we are mostly male. Is it a generational thing? I'm sorry Mountaineer, I'm afraid I can't do that.... ;)

Re: Do you listen to Scott Adams?

I guess it’s a symptom of a larger phenomenon: the forum is a ghost town. Personally, I prefer a forum with infrequent, well reasoned and thoughtful posts to one with incessant arguments about trivia..... Of course, frequent , well reasoned posts would be even better! ;D ps: For infrequent posts =>...

Re: What to do with a Low-Yielding 30-Year Bond

Could we possibly revisit this question again? What (reasonably plausible) scenario could make my 1.8 percent bonds worth hanging onto--keeping in mind that I won't live nearly long enough for them to reach maturity? Could you hedge your bond holdings with some gold? At the start of this video Bela...

I’m just saying, yes, base admissions on merit. +1 However, I am a little surprised Universities in the US would actively discourage sections of the student population from studying. The profit motive in Australian Universities is such that I could see them enrolling a potted plant if they could ch...

Re: Past performance is no guarantee of future results

My question is, for the purposes of financial planning, how do you estimate your future investment returns? The whole thing just seems like a crapshoot, which I guess it is at some level. Personally, I just take the Baseline Return as detailed here => https://portfoliocharts.com/portfolio/long-term...

Re: The Weird Portfolio - latest from Tyler/Portfolio Charts

Out of curiosity, I compared the Weird Portfolio to one I'd played around with for some time (I call it 25s, or Golden Quarters), a hybrid of the GB and PP, but with more stock allocation, it is 25% TSM, 25% SCV, 25% Gold, 25% ITT. Any thoughts? Would suggest you try modelling the Quarters Portfoli...

On second thought, is there a particular reason why BelangP uses a high dividend index fund Paul explained his reasoning in one of these podcasts https://www.fundyourretirement.com/?s=Paul+Belanger Unfortunately they changed the website layout, so I don't have a link to the particular talk anymore....

Just playing around with backtests. BelangP's model doesn't look too bad. You would have to model it with a high dividend ETF that went through a period where Bonds performed well though...

Thanks Mathjack,

Quite interesting. Is the only purpose of holding bonds to reduce volatility?

But again my followup would be to ask whether there is even a weak correlation, in other words if the dollar is strengthening is it more likely (even a little bit) that foreign stocks will go either up or down? Hi Stuper, Have a listen to this slightly dated talk. Makes me wonder if we should be lo...

Re: Hedging Against U.S. Dollar Losing Global Reserve Status

I don't really understand the relationship between foreign currencies and foreign stocks. Aren't they somewhat at odds with each other? So when a country's currency gets stronger, its stock prices can be affected negatively? I feel like I'm hearing conflicting advice on this issue. Some people say ...
