Re: Music for Cats

A couple of computers ago I bought an Aquarium screen saver for the cat.  He loved it.  Not so good for the monitor.

Re: Hoarding Cash
Not talking about cash going away. Just that stored in deposit accounts.
Ok, I see the distinction.  In a negative-interest-rate world, leaving "cash" in deposit accounts paying negative interest makes no sense, and could result in a run on such deposit accounts...

Re: Hoarding Cash
I, for one, am not really as concerned about the demise of cash. More wondering what happens if their is a shortage of it when/if lots of people come to convert their digital money into paper because it is more likely to retain value. This would occur in a deflationary environment. ...

Re: Hoarding Cash

I am going to put my tinfoil hat on and say that if you are truly worried about the demise of paper cash, holding paper cash makes no sense.  The government could call all of it in and issue you an EBT card.  After such-and-such date, paper cash would no longer be legal tender, etc. This is essentia...

Re: The Permanent All-In-One Cooking Device

I've been living with the "All-In-One Cooking Device" for a few months. Mini review:  Does what it says it does.  Seems sturdy.  Perfect rice.  Stainless steel pot better than teflon-coated stuff. Sous vide is ok, but there is something off-putting about pulling a perfectly cooked 135F med...

Re: Duke it out - Dividend style

Dividends do reduce the stock price, right up to the point where the market opens and prices fluctuate (up or down or unchanged).  But the company begins earning a new dividend at the same time.  So is the price adjusted upward daily (in the same manner it was reduced by the dividend payment) to acc...

Re: Duke it out - Dividend style

I think you miss the point. Unless gains (either dividends or capital gains) are realized, those gains, regardless of how they came about (i.e. the excellent performance of "Cory's Tequila Company"), are subject to vagaries of the market.  Your unrealized gains can evaporate in a heartbeat...

Re: Duke it out - Dividend style

Consider: Some wise poster on this board once made the assertion that capital gains (i.e. a component of total return) do not compound unless realized.  Dividends that are reinvested do.

Discuss.

Re: Selling "junk silver" coins on Ebay

I have bought and sold junk silver on Ebay, but not for a few years. My recollection is that US junk goes for a good bit above spot, Canadian a bit lower, and others a bit lower still. A quick, non-scientific survey of the bay shows a roll (20) of 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars recently sold for $151 (wi...

Hilariously, it's considered a historical landmark and can't be torn down and rebuilt! and how does that not drive the value down to squatter shack prices? it would mean the land cant be used.. I am sure it can be torn down, after completion of a $850,000 cultural resource study and a $1.5 million ...

So about $130,000 went to "taxes and savings".  Can't pay much in tax with $100K in charitable contributions.  So they really kept $15K plus "savings".
