Portfolio Monitoring Tool - Re-balancing Bands Only
I am certain that this has been discussed before, but I am unable to locate the thread. I would like to monitor the permanent portfolio using percentages only, so that I am not required to access my Excel spreadsheet and refresh to populate actual totals. Do any of the publicly available portfolio m...

Re: Adding money to PP
I too am in a similar position. When a rebalancing band is triggered, do you intend to rebalance the portfolio with additional cash or restore the allocation by selling the asset that appreciated beyond 35%? If the latter, I would contribute proportionally to all assets now. For me, its the former, ...

Re: William J. Bernstein Article: Wild about Harry
Behavioral Finance and Wealth Management: How to Build Optimal Portfolios That Account for Investor Biases by Michael Pompian is said to be a more practical book than Zweig's. Any experience with it? Still, i would prefer some shorter essay or lecture on the topic to begin with. This does not sound...

Re: Oh how it hurts to see no gains
All joking aside...I'm starting to get scared. I can't afford to lose this sum of money on a daily basis. Budd, It is troublesome to see losses, especially when you are in the drawdown stage such as myself. But what are we to do? Go to all cash and lose to inflation in the long run? Use an all ...

Re: Municipal Bond Funds
Yes, outside of the pp I have some VPAIX . I assume that this investment is fed and state tax exempt. Is this the prime reason for holding the fund and if you dont mind me asking, have you considered exchanging the fund for the PP or reducing duration? Correct on both counts. I love the pp, but I h...

Municipal Bond Funds
Does anyone else invest a portion of their taxable assets in municipal bond funds? I consider this bond fund as Tier 2 of my emergency fund, not knowing when or if I would ever require the funds. The volatility is low, but an 8-10% drawdown is not what I had in-mind. I may end up exchanging the fund...

Which investments would benefit from the fed reducing their asset purchases? Ex-Chairman Greenspan believes that FED dovish policy is preventing investors from moving beyond QE and purchasing equities to drive the market higher.

Re: Oh how it hurts to see no gains
It did? Google Finance shows the following for a 4x25 PP and a 50/50 split of VTI and SHY today: TLT +1.57 (1.38%) VTI -1.19 (-1.41%) SHV 0.00 (0.00%) GLD +0.29 (0.21%) Average: +0.045 All depends on when you rebalanced last, but I'm guessing most PP holders are a bit overweight stocks and underwei...

Re: Taxable PP and 35% Re-balance Band
If you hit a band, IMHO you should just rebalance and get it over with. We all dislike and work to minimize Uncle Sam's bite, but capital gains taxes from selling appreciated investments in taxable accounts is just a fact of life. Consider how fortunate you are to have sufficient investments that y...

Re: Taxable PP and 35% Re-balance Band
I currently have an investment in IT-TE municipal bonds that I can exchange to rebalance lagging assets when an upper band is breached. I can do this once, but this plan of rebalancing will not scale as the amount invested grows. It appears as if I will at some point have to realize capital gains in...

Re: Taxable PP and 35% Re-balance Band
This looks like a less viable option as larger portfolios require a significant influx of new funds to rebalance. Does it ever make sense to not rebalance the portfolio at all?

Re: Taxable PP and 35% Re-balance Band
What options are available to a taxable PP investor when an asset reaches 35% of the portfolio? I am primarily interested in minimizing taxes but still stay within the 15/35 bands. I also have cash outside of the portfolio if required. I'm sure there are several options and I am interested in how o...

The title of the show says it all...the money you CAN afford to lose. On a side note, does anyone listen to Bill Gunderson of Bill Gunderson Capital Management (1220 AM, purely entertainment)? The miners sure are volatile. What exactly is driving this recent rally in gold miners and precious metals? Doesn't the possibility of fed tightening and rising interest rates negatively impact the future prospects for these asset classes?

Re: Permanent Portfolio
It's not that you are becoming a broken record so much as I don't understand why you don't just move to a 60/40 allocation if you think it would allow you to sleep better at night. At the risk of me sounding like a broken record I will say again that the PP shouldn't give you heartburn, and it soun...
