Is this from the “taking it private” tweet? I thought that was old news, Ad. Or is the accusation more serious now?
I think the news is that the SEC has filed charges.
Correct.

Whitney "The Prophet" Tilson is making the case for TSLA dropping to $100 by year's end:

Tesla should be valued at less than $100 a share, investor says
Tesla heads into its earnings report out after the bell Wednesday trading at its lowest level in six months.

One strategist said it should get even worse for the electric car maker.

“This is a company that has a cult following – people that believe that [Elon Musk] is changing the world – and that’s the only reason this stock is trading at $260. There is no company that’s better at overpromising and under-delivering than Tesla, ” said Mark Tepper, founder and president of Strategic Wealth Partners, on CNBC’s “Trading Nation ” on Tuesday.

Tepper said its true valuation should be even lower.

“If I were to believe Tesla’s stories, with a 35% projected earnings growth rate, even at a PEG [price/earnings to growth] ratio that’s at a premium to the market, you still can’t value the stock at over $100 a share and $100 is on the very high end,” he said.

Tesla has not traded below $100 since mid-2013. It would need to drop 62% to reach that level.

A storm of headwinds are coming for the company, which could shake the stock, Tepper said. He mentioned an expiring tax credit, which could hurt demand, and increased competition, which means the company is jockeying for customers over price as well as quality.

“Quite frankly my biggest issue is management doesn’t execute on what they say. I don’t need management selling me a bill of goods. I want execution and you’re not getting that from Tesla,” said Tepper.

I wonder if Greg has seen the"Tesla to $4000" hype.

I won't be getting back in to this stock, but I wish I could get my octogenarian Dad into a Tesla. He'd be safer.

Cool! One drove by me the other day and it was so silent. I wonder what a city with all electric cars would sound like.

I've heard nice things about their cars, BUT...

Their business model does not impress. I have lost confidence in their management, one in particular and would not consider buying on a speculative basis while that individual is still prominently involved with the company's management. They have serious cash flow issues and are apparently having trouble keeping up with the bills. And lastly I think their stock is hugely overpriced. It's been pushed up by a lot of what I like to call "ideologically driven " investing. Tesla has a lot of very cool proprietary technology which is worth serious money. So I don't see the company going broke soon. But they have problems. I'm not really a stock analyst but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once a few years ago so...

Barring dramatic changes to my above listed concerns, I'd call Tesla a "Sell" at anything over $100 a share and no better than a "Hold" under that until the pot smoking clown departs the BofD.

I agree wholeheartedly. This is one of those companies that you can love as a consumer, and shun the stock.

Basic research is a money loser. Would you rather people werent throwing money at Tesla, and the R&D were fully funded by taxes?

Amazing turnaround. Tesla is nearly $500 per share.
I never would have guessed it! Haven’t owned it for a long time.

+50% since I bought, absolutely insane. I don’t see it ending well. Normally when stocks go vertical like this it is a matter of time to see the reverse happen.

Why would any American want an American company to lose to a Chinese one?

In a more general sense, I wish electric car companies all the best. I'm hoping that I currently own my last gas-powered car.

Feels like dotcom stuff. No sane way they are valued here. Hope people have the sense at some point to take profits.

Tesla and Amazon have been talked about for years as great shorts, can't be sustained, etc. But they certainly have sustained long enough to put many shorts in the poor house.

Another reason I will never own an individual stock. Always ends in tears. Falls, and can't sell, or rises and get out too early. Rarely was satisfying.

Can someone explain this to me please? Irrational exuberance? This company by all measures is not worth this valuation.

Looks like a combination of irrational exuberance and a classic short squeeze. Tesla has been one of the more heavily shorted stocks for a while and the recent run up has absolutely murdered the shorts. So there has been a scramble to "cover" their positions before they loose even more money. Which in turn is adding gasoline to the fire. Tesla is one of the most over valued stocks I've seen in a while. I am guessing no one here owns any but if any one does; I'd be pounding the "sell" button with a baseball bat.

Must be more than that, Jon. They were talking about it all morning on CNBC with some old guy saying that it’s going to go up further. It really does seem crazy, this valuation.

At some point, the talking heads were asking, “What if he can actually make the cars?” The word ‘fraud’ is no longer used and some of the initial criticisms have melted away.

I don’t own it, so I want to see it crash as soon as possible. O0 A friend of mine ordered the cybertruck, though.
