Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I'm clocking in at just over 80 Mbps with my new connection. This compares to the 3 Mbps or so I think I was getting over 3G. Total cost of the internet with TV package is like $55 CAD. Not bad as far as Canada goes.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
What did you use for your speed test? I'll do the same on mine and report the results.

Showoff! We're lucky to get 20 mbps, with a terrible ping, but that's satellite internet for you.
It's a lot better now that it has been in the past (up to about 18 months ago), so I don't generally complain.

I used to use a dedicated website but it looks like Google now has it as a feature!
Just google "internet speed test" or something along those lines and it should show up.

After my couple weeks on 3G even 20 Mbps would seem like a rocket ship I'm sure.Libertarian666 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 3:21 pm

Yes, I've had way too much experience with crappy internet service.Smith1776 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 3:37 pmAfter my couple weeks on 3G even 20 Mbps would seem like a rocket ship I'm sure.Libertarian666 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 3:21 pm

I remember back in 1998 when we upgraded from dial-up to ISDN. 128kbps, but at least it was the same up as down. Woohoo!

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
50 Mbps here, but we’re paying for 100/100.
The reason I stay is that we never have to call customer service like we did with Comcast.

When you guys say 100/100 and 88/68 are you talking about upstream/downstream speeds?

If so, how are your guys' upload speeds so fast?

Yea, that's download/upload. I think that's pretty standard, right? I'm on fiber. If I was wired in it would be 150mb/s, but I'm using a wifi router so I can be upstairs, in the bathroom, out on the deck, upside down, whatever.
You there, Ephialtes. May you live forever.
Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
Every provider I've ever had has always delivered just a fraction of the upload speed relative to download speed.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 5:32 pm Yea, that's download/upload. Maybe that's more of a Canadian thing? Either way, it makes uploading YouTube videos an all-day affair. That time I uploaded that recording of my stand up set to share on the forum took forever lol.

Do you plug the ethernet cord right into your computer, or are you on a wifi router?

All the computers are on wifi. All the set-top boxes are cabled.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 5:42 pm Do you plug the ethernet cord right into your computer, or are you on a wifi router?

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
Well, that would explain the computers, since wifi speeds can vary, but wired speeds should be as advertised. What do you mean by set-top boxes? TV?

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
Yeah. It could very well be attenuated wifi connectivity causing slow upload speeds, but I personally doubt it. Every connection I've ever had since as long as I can remember has always had a large upload to download disparity. Either way, I'm a bit too lazy to go and check with a cable lol.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 5:51 pm Well, that would explain the computers, since wifi speeds can vary, but wired speeds should be as advertised. Can a weak wifi signal actually cause upload speeds to be compromised while download speeds don't get affected at all?
Set-top boxes are all TV yeah. They're all wired so as to ensure my folks get maximum bandwidth possible for watching... whatever old people TV they watch hehe.

I bought a George Foreman grill to throw in the back of the car a few weeks ago.
It has greatly improved my dinnertime time when I don't want to put up with any of the local dining restrictions.
Walmart pre-seasoned fajita meat tonight. Nom nom.

When I was dirtbagging around, I had a little Primus camp stove that worked pretty good. The Foreman seems smarter if you can leech off some hotel/AirBNB electricity. Maybe get a slow cooker for when you can stay in a place a little longer? Goddamn I love slow cookers.

Slow cookers are the bomb. Cabeza, barbacoa, pork shank... oh yeah...
What I'm really looking for now is an alcohol torch. Planning ahead to when I can fly again.
I think I can slow cook most anything in the hotel hot water and then I just need to torch the surface for the Maillard reaction. My plan is to fill my carry on "liquids" bag with a half dozen 100ml bottles of Everclear. Everclear is the all purpose fuel/beverage/disinfectant.

As Musashi says... this requires more consideration. I just throw everything in and turn it on, like 99% of all humans on the planet, but god dammit this sounds like an easy way to get a nice little flavor enhancer.Mark Leavy wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 7:11 pm Slow cookers are the bomb. We're fortunate to have a couple of options for fiber internet where I live so I'm getting 1Gb / 1Gb. Mesh WiFi brings it down to around 400 / 400 depending on the device. $70/mo.
