BTW do you have a favourite episode?

Mine is Detour. The one where Mulder and Scully discover and fight against those camouflage things in the Appalachian woods.
I think I have just favorite lines and scenes, like “nojo on the rojo.” Sometimes it’s nice to review the show, like slipping into a warm bath. Familiarity + 90s nostalgia.

"90s TV nostalgia" (particularly for a show on Fox) reminded me of this phenomenal article about how Rupert Murdoch got the NFL rights on Fox back in the early 90s. Even if you have no interest in football, this (long) story of how the NFL on Fox came to be is worthwhile reading. It's an amazing story. Murdoch "overpaid" for the NFL rights and it quickly became clear that they were worth a lot more than everyone had thought. It was much cheaper than buying CBS and worked out just as well.

These guys were inventing new things that had never been done before. It even includes how the iconic "NFL on Fox" theme music came to be (the instruction was "make it sound like Batman has an NFL team"). And the idea of having the score on the screen the entire time was revolutionary. They had to reverse engineer each scoreboard to be able to run wires into the TV room in order for the broadcast to have access to the game clock.

Similar to last year — lose weight, get stronger, play more music

Last year — was doing well on all until death of parent mid year and my getting COVID a few weeks after.

So, gained about 10lb last year, although did get stronger, just not as much as hoped.
Sorry to hear of your loss. If it helps, I gained WAY more weight than you this past year. ;D
Thanks. And, nah, no pleasure from you gaining more weight 🙂 (and, not too worried about my weight gain — is what it is. I also meditated most days last year . Oohhhhmmmm - I am one with my gut. Ooohhhhmm 😁)

May this be a better year across the board

Hey guys, question for you all that I'd like your opinion on.

A friend who I attended college with has some money stashed away (about $5,000) and she wants to get some graduate level education.

She's debating two options for that amount of money:

1) Get a master's degree at a low end school (not diploma mill but on the very lowest end of accredited schools)
2) Get a post graduate certificate from a recognized research university with a name brand (a PGCert is about 1/3rd of a master's)

So, in a nutshell, it's better name recognition versus a higher credential for the same amount of money. For the record, she's studying computer science as I did.

I thought it was a really interesting debate. What are your thoughts on the trade-off?

No idea how those hiring would see each option. Hopefully Tyler will comment.
Just out of curiosity, does she have a favorite programming language?

I told her via text, "My internet friends want to know what your favourite programming language is."

She said "WTF lol. Uhhhh Javascript?"

This is from the last paragraphs:

"The high price of gold, for one. Plus, I've never really been sure how to implement Browne's Permanent Portfolio in real life. I mean, what are the actual steps for making it happen? Fail-Safe Investing is a good book, but it's long on theory and short on actual details. I'm not a professional investor; sometimes I need to have somebody hold my hand.

That's where this book comes in.

The Permanent Portfolio is an easy-to-access how-to manual for putting Browne's investment strategy into practice. This book doesn't just cover the theories behind this method; it also gives details for putting the theories to work in the Real World.

Nobody knows where the economy is headed. Nobody knows if economic prosperity looms on the horizon – or if we're in for decades of rampant inflation. And because nobody knows what's ahead, nobody knows the best way to save for retirement (or any other purpose).

But with the Permanent Portfolio, you don't have to see the future. You don't need a crystal ball to divine the best place to put your money. Instead, you hedge your bets against all possibilities. Sexy? Nope. Safe? You bet. And now that Craig Rowland and J.M. Lawson have explained exactly how to put the Permanent Portfolio into practice, I intend to do so. Perhaps you will, too.

J.D. Roth

Yes. Proved it conclusively.

I was going through it quickly and it seemed that in it (last updated August 2020) he was anti-gold. Then was surprised to see this:
