So, I lost my license and I couldn't drive for 5 months. During that time I was hoping for some world event that would stop me from needing my vehicle. My wish was granted via lockdowns.

I wished that some world event would happen so I'd be reimbursed all the money I had to spend on tickets and that lawyer. My wish was granted via federal and provincial economic relief benefits.

In my most bitter moments I wished that I could somehow "get back" at the police for ticketing me. Now there are massive riots and major political pressure on the police.

I'm starting to feel like I have some kind of magic powers or something. O_O
I keep thinking about this quote above because I often have that feeling, too. I get what I wish for, and while it's not in an evil, twisted Monkey's Paw way, one should be careful what they wish for.

As for your thoughts on the police, in Hong Kong they used to say '好仔唔當差', good guys don't join the force.

Perhaps you should consider Monkey Shoulder instead of a twisted Monkey's Paw. Magic powers will abound. ;D

To clarify, the Monkey's Paw isn't twisted. The way things turn out in the story is twisted. I'm trying to cut down on my comma habit, but it looks like I needed a comma after twisted.

Mmm Monkey Shoulder. I bought a bottle once upon a time.

Maybe what will happen in Vancouver is the same as what's happened in NY: The police budget will be cut, but not because of the protesters' demands.

I posted this in another thread, but to recapitulate here: NYC like all other cities (but maybe worse here) is facing an enormous budget hole, so they're looking everywhere for costs to cut. The NYPD decided to limit overtime, extend equipment lifetimes, reduce uniform budgets - that sort of thing. That was already in the works before the protests started. Then along came deBlasio trumpeting this budget cut as "defunding the police" and making it look like he's doing it to appease the mob. A total fiction.

I got this info from a friend's son who is an FDNY paramedic, so it's a bit of insider info. Very reassuring. There will be no actual cuts in law enforcement, patrols, arrests etc. Luckily for those of us who prefer to live crime-free, Dermot Shea, the police commissioner, is a competent, no-nonsense conservative. Nice job keeping deBlasio occupied with harmless distractions - too bad he couldn't pull that off when it came to the new bail law, but that came mostly from Albany.

I would not take this situation too lightly.

The rise of Antifa in the face of the craven capitulation of Democratic mayors like Jacob Frey, Bill de Blasio and Jenny Durkin reminds me of the anarchist takeover of Barcelona in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. It did not end well.

In Seattle, the anarchists are occupying a police precinct house (sound familiar?) and have created an "autonomous zone" within the city.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_H ... omous_Zone

For those unfamiliar with the events of the 1930s, read George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia. It is a classic that describes how the anarchists and socialists of his day were led like innocent little lambs to a slaughter ordered by none other than Josef Stalin.

I'm pretty sure Seattle must have a leftist government. Let them figure out how to deal with it. They have all the answers. I'm pretty sure in a few years time when all the producing-class have left the city they will regret whatever solution they chose.

The potential problem with letting leftist cities implode is that as their citizens flee to other places, they will bring their leftist politics with them. Like replicated viruses escaping from a dying cell.

There are a lot of people who support leftist political ideology but don't want to live under its consequences (high crime, high taxes, economic stagnation). So they eventually move for financial and safety reasons, but they don't change their leftist politics.

You are right, but only half right. The producing class will leave the cities, but the politicians in power would rather blame their failures on four hundred years of racial oppression than forty years of mismanagement and one party rule.

Maybe not here, but on at least one forum I'm on. Especially twitter links.I lose track of which forum sites have which features.
And I didn't want someone to log on and see the clip without voluntarily going there because it's unpleasant.

Wow....That's one of those funky neighborhoods where stuff like this isn't terribly surprising. There was a hint in the article that this was part of an ongoing feud between one of the victims and the attackers. i.e. not a random event.

It is the sort of thing that is more likely to happen given that the NYPD are no longer functional. That's the worrisome part. The punch line of the article was "No arrests have been made" and even if by some miracle that happens, there is zero chance that those arrested will spend any time in jail.

That’s true, although it was random for at least one customer who ended up in the hospital.

Some potentially good news...

Yesterday, for the first time since the BLM protests started, I saw a couple of NYPD officers on foot patrol and a police car in my neighborhood. A very pleasant surprise! The "reports of shots fired" and "person stabbed/shot" notifications on the Citizen app are still happening in the funky areas surrounding my neighborhood, but it seems to be much less common in the past few days...maybe 1-2/day as opposed to the 5-10 daily reports for the past few months. There was also a recent highly publicized murder case in a black neighborhood in which the police investigated and made an arrest. Kind of hilarious that the police arresting someone for murder is major local news.

I'm hoping this means that the NYPD is quietly resuming its normal policing. There's still going to be damage from the bail reform law, the criminals released from Rikers, and the ending of Broken Windows, but maybe we aren't facing a return to the '80s after all.

Maybe.
Want to bet a couple of hundred thousand dollars on it?

The People that are left after the Exodus will need to make up the cities revenue shortfall.
Look at Flint/Detroit Mi.
Started slow and just seemed to feed on itself.
Hope the exodus does Not happen.

Thanks! Believe me I'm keeping a close eye on things. In my neighborhood (unlike the rest of the city) apartment sales are up a bit but prices are stable, so far. Lots of renters are leaving though.

I'm not sure if it's a good time to get in and this will all pass in a year or two or three, or if half the city is hanging back and wondering when will be the time to get out.
