Favorite Movies - Your Short List

Post by Mountaineer » Tue Dec 08, 2020 5:14 am

What are your very favorite movies? Mine are:

Top Gun (1986) - Great flying scenes, the good guys win, emotional drama with Goose's end.
Twelve O'Clock High (1949) - Excellent portrayal of the burden of leadership.
Star Wars Episode IV (1977) - Got to love the high tech filmography.
Apocalypse Now (1979) - The impact of war, dark to the max.
DNA has its own language (code), and language requires intelligence. There is no known mechanism by which matter can give birth to information, let alone language. It is unreasonable to believe the world could have happened by chance.

Hmm...

Full Metal Jacket 1987 - Realistic as.
On the Beach 1959 - Because I live there now
Mad Max 1 & 2 only - Very creative for its time plus No1 done on a shoestring
Forbidden Planet 1956 - Pure Sci Fi
Das Boot 1981 - Realistic as.

and a honourable mention to the
Original Twilight Zone TV series 1959

So far no one like movies from the 90's onwards ???

Apollo 13 is up there for me.

Ladder 49 (despite the presence of Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta) if you want a film about MEN.

Oh, and Ben Hur is really great. This is just stream of consciousness.

Others
--Wall-E
--Guardians of the Galaxy
--Planes, Trains and Automobiles
--Yesterday (excellent https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8079248/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)

A couple of my favorite "feel-good" movies:

Sideways (2004) - Showcases the beautiful Santa Barbara wine country near where I lived for a few years. Simple plot, great characters, happy ending.
Chef (2014) - A fun, wholesome movie about succeeding by following one's passion and building relationships with people along the way.

Yes, Chef was fun! I also highly recommend the 1993(?) British TV series of the same name. At least the first season of it.

I just finished watching the latest one last night. With both Arnold and Linda Hamilton in it. The one where a woman comes back from the future to save another woman in the present.

I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark at the movie theaters many times.

Also saw That Thing You Do two or three times at the movies.

I watch a Netflix movie nearly every night...many of them of recent vintage...and I like most of them.

Are you saying you have a problem with Hollywood's recent portrayal of men as pussified nitwits, requiring a strong female to fix them? ::)
Will we see you at the next James Bond movie? >:D

Maybe they will remake Alice in Wonderland played by a man?

+1 on Xan's votes on Apollo 13 & Ben Hur. Would add Spartacus as well. (Haven't seen Ladder 49)

Vinny is saying there are two versions?
Some of you think he’s asking, but he’s telling? However, there *is* a different question being asked and it is embedded in what a appears to be a non-question?

And that question, Mark, is, which version;

Or maybe I misread, Vinny, and you’re really asking. In which case:
There is a Hong Kong remake, the Black Cat. One year later, 1991.
There’s a TV series that came from the film.
A Korean film was inspired by the 1990 Besson film.

You are correct. It was somewhat ambiguous what I was doing. Sorry. Unintended.

I saw one version about three times. I believe that Vic Morrow's daughter - Jennier Jason Leigh - was in that movie.

I watched many episodes of the TV series when it was going on. It was must watch TV for me. One of the few TV shows I've watched since the 1960s. Several years ago I went to eBay and bought every single season of that TV show. Have not yet started watching them.

Within the last year, though, I watched a DVD I'd acquired. I thought it was the same movie I'd originally seen on VHS (the one with Vic Morrow's daughter in it).

However, the movie was quite different. Nikita was played by Anne Parillaud. And, now I'm seeing it is one of the ones you cited above as it was directed by Luc Besson.

I think that now was source of my question. Wondering to which of the versions that Mark was citing? And, knowing that there were at least two versions and wondering if there were more, which you seem to be saying above.

Finally, Netflix had a multi-season series which was based upon the same premise for the La Femme Nikita - bad women who get recruited to join this secret government force. I am almost certain that the main character's name was also Nikita - played by an Asian woman. Just checked and it was as the series is entitled "Nikita". This series was excellent. I'd watch many episodes at a clip until I got through all the seasons.

Finally cleared up my confusion regarding all of this.

This was the movie - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_of_ ... 1993_film) that I was thinking that was also called La Femme Nikita.

This is the one I'd seen two or three times in the 90s. It's name was Point of No Return. And, it was not Vic Morrow's daughter who played the role but another actor (Peter Fonda) whose daughter played the role (Bridget Fonda).

As I stated I did not see that 1990 original until sometime in the last year. Only watched it once. I found Point of No Return to have been much better. But if you like the whole concept / premise, then highly recommend the Netflix Nikita series. That was best of all.

"Favorite" depends on what mood I'm in, but here goes, in no particular order:

The Princess Bride
Star Wars (original)
The first Star Trek reboot
Wrath of Khan
Shawshank Redemption
Seabiscuit
Dead Poet Society
Apollo 13

Nothing to apologize for. I like people's different idiosyncrasies and signatures. It's what makes you Vinny!

P.S. I love the movie Big Night
It could never be made today.

Amadeus (NOT the director's cut)
Shaka Zulu
Zulu
My Fair Lady
Her

Dis-Honorable Holiday mention - Bad Santa (un-rated version)

Subject to further editing as I ponder this throughout the work day.

I also don't know why the Zulu movies are so dang good.

WiseOne, based on this list I should tell you a story. Years ago shortly before the first Star Trek reboot, there was a 9pm weeknight one-off showing of Wrath of Khan at the Alamo Drafthouse. I went on a lark. Super fun crowd. Even just waiting around to go into the theater was a lot of fun. We sat. The writers of the new Star Trek film (who were there for some reason...) stood up front and told about how Wrath of Khan was their favorite and had inspired them. The movie started, and during the Kobiyashi Maru scenario there started to be some artifacts: a line on the screen, then the top half was on the bottom, and finally the film appeared to just burn up like in the old days.

The owner of the theater got back up front and played like he was stalling for time, and then a guy in a trench coat appeared carrying two big suitcase things. He stepped into the light and... It was Leonard Nimoy. It was film canisters he was carrying. He said "why don't we just see the new film instead, right now?"

The whole thing had been a ruse, and this was the surprise world premiere of the new film. Leonard Nimoy was RIGHT THERE. It was pretty awesome.
