Asians are the masters of themed restaurants that blatantly ignore copyrights. O0
Oh well, it’s cooler than their Holocaust themed eateries, and far more tasteful.

That’s a good question. Probably my two favorites were these little places in Taiwan. Neither one had a name. One was in a shabby building and run by mainlanders serving mostly beef with green onion, and the other was a Taiwanese street stall - seafood noodles.

Had some great meals in Hong Kong and Italy, and one in Japan, but I was young and I bet these places are gone. Thailand, same. Little island in Greece? Same. That dude was already old 30 years ago.

There’s a neat little Japanese place called Yakitori Totto in New York. I ducked in their long stairway before they opened to get away from the rain, and the waitress thought i was some homeless guy. She stepped over me nervously and sent the chef out to check on me. O0 I think they still exist!

It seems like good restaurants close too soon, doesn’t it? My friends and I are still lamenting the closure of our weekly pizza place (but there are 4 alternatives) and a different friend and I are similarly missing a more continental style place. Is it cheesy to say my favorite place is where my friends are?

I should mention that I like eating simply too. Bowl of oatmeal with real maple syrup can be be very comforting. I would drop in McDonald’s from time to time if it weren’t surrounded by homeless. I guess they’re keeping me healthy.

If I were stuck eating one cuisine for life, I think I’d be happy with real Italian or Chinese. You?

Years ago I taught English in an Asian country during a summer between college semesters. In the country's capital city where I worked there was this restaurant chain called Acme Burgers. It was a complete 100% McDonald's ripoff in terms of its décor. The signs outside looked exactly like McD's except instead of two yellow arches there was just one. Another funny thing is that this country was working on joining the first world (which it has now) and so they were getting serious about cracking down on counterfeiting/intellectual property theft. In the English language newspaper you would frequently see court mandated public confessions/apologies.

Hi..my name is Mr. X. I was arrested and found guilty of making fake Rolexes. I formally apologize to my family, friends and my country. I am a bad person and an embarrassment to all the wonderful people of City Y.

They were quite funny and became a weekend "must read."

McDonald's originally had just a single arch, and there are a few that still do:
https://www.nbcnewyork.com/entertainmen ... lden-arch/

And in one of the more mind-twisting copyright lawsuits:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/paramount- ... 1661692993
Basically, in the 80's "Coming to America" featured an obvious McDonald's rip-off, "McDowell'". The joke in the film was that the McDonald's people were always coming after the owner. Fast forward to somebody making a McDowell's pop-up burger stand, and being sued by Paramount!

I saw that popup McDowell’s news item. Hilarious!

Looks like Acme burger exists in the States. Maybe it’s unrelated and the name was stolen, too, along with McD’s layout.

One of my favorite restaurants in the world was always the Burger King in the Hong Kong airport. It was nothing special on its own. But after spending multiple weeks in mainland China, the opportunity to have a generic American burger with imported Australian beef before boarding a flight home was pretty much the best thing imaginable. I would look forward to that place for days.

I used to go to the Hong Kong airport every 60 days! Easiest way to renew a visa and get back to Thailand. { EDIT: Taiwan. }I had many a burger king burger there. This was before Kai Tak became Norman Foster’s grandiose Chep Lap Kok (spelling?)

Oh man...that brings back a memory. My wife and I went to Hong Kong and Kwantung/Kwelin for our honeymoon in the mid 80s. We were in China for IIRC 4 days...and every day the meals were the same. The "hotel" rooms ranged from a Godfather movie looking hospital room to complete 1960s based opulence (former CCP leader retreat compound). We both lost a lot weight because the food was pretty bad for American tastes (even for me who had tramped Asia for a couple years).

And to the point...never has Shakey's pizza and pasta tasted so good as when we got back to HK.

It's crazy how the little out of the way places seem to be the most memorable, and serve the best freaking food.

My favourite restaurant in the universe is this little place in the city of Langley, B.C. called C&U. It's a family run joint that serves Vietnamese cuisine. I don't even particularly like Vietnamese food, but this place has food that hits just right. One dish in particular: number 14 served with beef. It's a simple dish. It's strips of beef with some kind of special satay sauce they make in-house. They serve that on top of a bed of rice and with a side salad. That's it. That's the whole dish. And let me tell you, it friggin' ROCKS my socks off every time.

My favourite overall cuisine though? Probably Italian. Nothing beats pizza and pasta. I think I just have a carb thing.

Come visit Vancouver some time and I'll be sure to show you the best spots!

I do plan on visiting New York sometime with the lady friend. I'll be sure to hit up Yakitori Totto! Damn. Now I'm getting hungry.

Burger King rocks. Whopper Wednesdays along with a side order of ghost pepper nuggets. Aw man. Lately I've been on an A&W kick though. That $4 CAD teen burger deal is hard to beat.

😂 Don’t get me wrong. I love my fellow Jews. But I don’t want to read a Rapture book by them.
The authors’ names have to at least be a little more Christian-sounding than those four, the four horsemen of the Abramowitz.
EDIT: I just looked them up. They wrote Yiddish with Dick and Jane, which I loved. 👍
