Phone - connected to keyboard / monitor

Post by vnatale » Fri Mar 11, 2022 4:40 pm

Have we yet reached the point with any phone wherein we can now use a regular computer keyboard and regular computer monitor with it? When portable computers / laptops came out they did not have that capability but then, at some point, it first became possible and now common.

I assume it would connect to both via bluetooth. But it seems like even more would have to packed into the phone to make this possible.

If this were possible with a phone I'd use mine far more than I do. At this point it's a distant choice compared to doing things on this computer.

I loathe the phone interface/keyboard. Gates needs to lose his patent protections, especially after saying Australia had the right covid response. So all these companies will stop ramming us into using apps.

You can use this to send text messages from computer https://www.freecarrierlookup.com/

Well, for a keyboard I often use a Logitech K480. It works well when I have a long texting conversaton and don’t feel like using the “traditional” methods for lack of a better word.

But, to use it with a big monitor, I think Samsung invented a system for that. I’ll look it up and edit it in.

You isolated my reason for wanting to have a keyboard and monitor to use on the phone.

There are a lot of apps for phones that do not have equivalent software for computers.

For one important one that I'm suing I installed an app emulator (BlueStacks) on this computer so I'm not stuck only using that app on my phone but can also do it all on this computer.

Bottom line: Goal would be able to use any app on my phone using a traditional computer keyboard and monitor.

Thanks. You have so far let me know that some of this is possible.

Here is what I just found for keyboards:

https://www.androidauthority.com/best-b ... ds-699723/

Now if I can find a monitor equivalent I'll be in business. Cannot have just one without the other!

In my search I found someone asking my exact same question way back in 2013, nine years ago!

I also found almost everything talking about monitoring an android phone. Not using a monitor with it.

But this might work?

I read through the entire article and it looked good. I started following the steps then came to the realization that this computer does not have bluetooth capability.

Buying something like this would remedy that?

Nice phone but looks like no go with the built in USB C to HDMI.

https://www.reddit.com/r/motorola/comme ... _work_for/

With the Samsung phones that support dex, you can plug them into a USB C to HDMI dock. A USB C dock also lets you use a wired keyboard, mouse and even Ethernet.

If you use the free messaging app from Google (ya, I know...), there is an interface that works flawlessly. https://messages.google.com
I like this a lot, too. Great for receiving texts on my desktop when I’m already doing stuff on that machine. And of course for answering with a full keyboard.

I do the same with some chat apps although Signal for desktop seems to be broken. 😭

I went to the ULR which MangoMan supplied in hopes of getting it installed on this computer. It instead it told me it was already installed. Yes, it is already installed on my phone as it IS the app I do use for texts on my phone. How do I get it installed also on this computer?

I just tried to install. It only gave me phone options. No option for this computer.

By the way ... the phone options included phones I have never owned. I know someone else had my phone number before I got it. Were those phones owned by the former person who had my present the phone number?

I don’t think I really installed anything. If you follow the link, you see two options above the 🌞 with the white moustache: Messages for Web and Download. I choose the first option. You are presented with a QR code.

• To prepare your phone to scan, you go to the Messages app. Not your favorite chat app, but the standard Android messages app.
• There should be a hamburger button, i.e. 3 horizontal lines, and no matter what phone you’re on, you’ll see something about linking an account.
• Tap the right thing(s), camera comes up. Put that qr code in the crosshairs.

Btw, this works even when my ipad mini serves as the “desktop.” My chat apps generally do not like me linking an Android phone to an iOS device. This works and, though it didn’t before, Signal is now working this way.

Received a response today from Samsung in case it is of value to anyone else:

We see that you want to know if Samsung Dex works only on Samsung phones or any other phones.

We appreciate your support and interest towards Samsung products. We will help you with the available information.

We would like to inform you that as of now Samsung Dex supports the Samsung Devices starting from S8 and above.

Yes, you did make the initial recommendation. But after I went to the web site I struck out in trying to implement. It was only after Dualstow intervened with instructions that I was able to achieve success.

I did give you credit way above: "I went to the {url} which MangoMan supplied"

Nowadays, connecting a mouse and keyboard to the phone makes no sense because each technique is designed for a specific purpose. If you want to play a computer game, it would be difficult to do it through the small screen of a smartphone. I once encountered such a situation. After trying to connect my mouse and keyboard, my phone just shut down. Most likely, at that time, the smartphone was not designed to connect to third-party accessories. The settings may be confused after turning it on again, and all your data will be deleted. Data recovery is a complicated thing. You can try to restore the deleted folders yourself in this situation, but it is better to contact the professionals. It is better not to take the risk. Otherwise, you can lose important documents. Do you need it?
