2. Regarding bogledude's political transformation? It reminded me of sports fans who change their support / evaluation of their teams on the basis of one win or loss. Not really exactly like that but definitely being too swayed by somewhat recent events.

Well, I think that’s an unfair characterization. Teams don’t stand for anything (At least they’re not supposed to). If your party betrays or even disappoints you, it may be time to switch. What’s happening to the left is both creeping extremism and a change in values. Not to open a can of worms, but I’m not too keen on how they feel about Israel. But, mainly it’s the socialist leanings that get to me.

Then what happens when your next party betrays or even disappoints you? You go back to your former party and, so on? That was my analogy of fans being so quick to flip flop on their opinions based upon short-term events.

As an avid follower of Washington Journal I innumerable times hear people saying, "I used to be a Democrat (or a Republican) but..." My immediate response is that most likely you were a superficial Democrat or Republican with no deep roots. Just easily swayed to no longer being what you were.

It explains the way a president's polls can vary so much in a short period of time. The people answering the polls do not take any deep measure of the person but, instead, get swayed mainly with what is going on today, exhibiting little perspective.

Less than 10 minutes after I wrote the above I hear a caller say, "I used to be a Republican but now I'm a Democrat..."

And, then less than 5 minutes later the next caller says, "I used to be a Democrat but now I'm a Republican."

I think I determined what this is for me. Those who choose to be a member of a political party have some need for belonging, which overrides their desire for Independence. I've never been or proclaimed myself a member of any party. I too value my independence to ever do such a thing.

And, now I hear yet another caller who "I used to be a Democrat but now I'm a Republican..."
Above provided by: Vinny, who always says: "I only regret that I have but one lap to give to my cats." AND "I'm a more-is-more person."

Gotta pick your battles, Vinny. Whatever issues are most important are what you should vote on, in my opinion. So yes, you might end up back in your old party. Why not?

It's like that recent viral video of Bill Maher saying something like, "I didn't change, the Democratic Party did."

Things evolve. Especially in the modern world. There is no law you have to stay loyal to one party forever.

@Vinny, if I moved to Tampa, I would be happy to become a Bucs fan and bail on the Bears. If I moved to Phoenix, hello Cardinals.

Not me.

I became a Providence College basketball fan when I was 9 years old. 60+ years later I'm still a Providence College fan even though I moved 100 miles away 50 years ago. Even though I got two degrees from the University of Massachusetts and its team was #1 in the country at one point. Did not matter to me. I'd chosen my forever team, unswayed by how they performed or how some team much closer to me (20 minutes away) performed.

In the case of sports teams I believe in loyalty. When it comes to political parties, I believe in Independence. For any of your businesses or organizations when you are at a meeting do all the participants consistently come down on one side of the other for all issues, similar to the way party members of political parties do? Isn't it more natural to express independent thought rather than to substantially embrace all the positions of a particular political party?

Back to your comment....it says to me that your interest in the Bears is not deeply rooted. It's simply a product of where you live and who is most convenient to follow.

Last week I walked into a music show. Some guy gave me a quizzical look. He said, "How can you be wearing a Yankees had and a Celtics shirt?" I told him it was a sign of my independence that I choose my teams rather than being bound to being just with the teams nearest to me.

Same as the extreme rightists in their treatment of Chris Wallce of Fox News Sunday. When he was on that show I always thought he was extremely fair to both sides.

I was a fan of the Raiders...until they decided to hold my state hostage for a 750M sweetheart deal for their stadium.

Admittedly, our politicians (both parties) were also at fault, but I have a hard time rooting for a team that is so blatently sucking at the teat of the taxpayer.

Not at all. An independent having no side, is free to choose EACH time. The "used to be-ers..." were convicted supporters of one side for a long period of time and now they are now convicted supporters of the other side for a long period of time. It always make me wonder how convicted they were the first time around and how convicted they will now be with the opposite side. Again I have to make the analogy to something in sports - the bandwagon fans.

The independent is convicted towards choosing the best, not blindly staying with one party's candidate(s). Therefore the independent is acting in a consistent fashion in every election by making a conscious choice rather than just voting for the same party candidate time after time.

It is only C-Span cameras that are allowed in the room for tonight's hearings starting at 8 PM. And, of course, C-Span is the only media that will offer you complete, unbiased coverage from "gavel to gavel".

Supposed to start at 8:02 PM.

I have it on my TV now with Yankee radio / TV broadcast on this computer.

I look forward to the day where Rand just rants about fringe libertarian issues. For now though, yeomans work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ICBBK-d-C0

That Fauci couldn't be there in person because of a positive "test," despite all his jabs, is a nice touch. He sounds healthy. How odd!
