Paywalled, but for those of you with a WSJ subscription, this New Mexico compound is really something.

Interesting place and person. I like the statement that he no longer wants to live at the place, and prefers to be on the coast and go fishing. Sounds like he's gotten wiser with age.

I do like the herd of yak though. And the 1/4 mile deep well!
Ditto. No paywall problem for me either. Interesting article.

LOL!

There's a part of me that's really attracted to this sort of thing, but it's counterbalanced by:
1. the miser side of me that recognizes how expensive it would be to maintain, just like living in any mansion would be
2. the practical side of me that recognizes how lonely and limiting of a life it would be to live there
3. the tactician side of me that recognizes individual prepping to be ineffective because in a total collapse situation, the militias that inevitably rise will have no trouble overwhelming and subjugating individuals and families no matter how well fortified their compounds are. The whole story of human civilization is basically that of larger and better organized groups subjugating smaller ones and isolated individuals.

Mr. Mintz said he now plans to leave New Mexico, and will sell the property without ever moving into the main house. It might seem odd, he said, but he’s “grown out of the idea of being there.” He said he has dreams of living on the ocean and going fishing. For him, it was more about the journey of developing the property than actually living there, he said.
Sounds like the owner eventually reached the same conclusion.

I agree on all counts. I just like the way it looks.
And the yaks!
