The flooded midwest
https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-03- ... production
Zero Hedge makes it out to be very bad. "Ladies and gentlemen, food prices are about to start soaring in a major way. There has not been such a massive blow to U.S. food production in my entire lifetime."
moda, was there 10 inches of snow around you a few days ago?

Re: The flooded midwest
ZH and the media make everything out to be apocalyptic all the time.
Everything is breaking news , once in a generation, end of the world shit, all day, every day.
NBC Nightly News is
1) Story on the latest Trump fiasco
2) Severe weather affecting xxx millions
3) Latest medical breaking news telling you what you have or haven't been doing is wrong
4) A final feel good story so we don't leave you in a depressed state
5) All interspersed with drug commercials.
Other than being cold for far too long now, can't complain about the weather in the Chicago area.

Life really is weird nowadays isn't it? Since it's the only life I've had unless you believe in re-incarnation I have nothing to compare it to but I can't help but think of how much different it would have been to be born before the age of mass communication. In your list you left out mass shootings and the latest outrage of something somebody said on either the left or right of the political spectrum. I'm sure the list could go on and on.Cortopassi wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 1:54 pm ZH and the media make everything out to be apocalyptic all the time.

Not sure I would want to give up the many benefits of living in the modern age, and probably wouldn't choose to do so if I could, but I do think it would be good to disconnect at least from time to time.

According to the Bloomberg article cited, it was record flooding. I may be behind the times, but I don't think Reuters or Bloomberg are associated with hysterical ravings.Cortopassi wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 1:54 pm ZH and the media make everything out to be apocalyptic all the time.

ZH is the entity that's extrapolating from the facts reported by the news to say that food prices are probably going to rise due to shortages caused by flooding and subsequent destruction of agricultural capability. That part.. I don't know about, I'm wondering more about the actual extent of the damage. I haven't seen any coverage in my RSS feed (or news, just checked) until I saw something that linked to ZH.

I remember the Mississippi river experiencing a "once in a lifetime" flooding event once in my own lifetime although I can't remember when it was.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 3:14 pmAccording to the Bloomberg article cited, it was record flooding. As for food prices rising as a response that may be true in the short run but with today's global economy it's hard to believe that some evil capitalists aren't going to rush in and take advantage of the situation to make a profit in the country with the world's largest economy and it will eventually return to normal. A-hole Politicians of all stripes could totally "f***" with that idea if given enough power, of course.
I think that flood did have long term effects on those who lived in the area. Kind of recall watching a documentary about it. Maybe on PBS.

Well, since you're younger than I thought, we can rule out the one in 1927 that catapulted Herbert Hoover to the presidency.jacksonM wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 3:27 pmI remember the Mississippi river experiencing a "once in a lifetime" flooding event once in my own lifetime although I can't remember when it was.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 3:14 pmAccording to the Bloomberg article cited, it was record flooding. The evil capitalist farmers, according to Reuters, were stockpiling their harvest on location, waiting for higher prices, which were flooded. Safe to assume they'll be getting bailed out? Too soon?As for food prices rising as a response that may be true in the short run but with today's global economy it's hard to believe that some evil capitalists aren't going to rush in and take advantage of the situation to make a profit in the country with the world's largest economy and it will eventually return to normal. Quite excellent. I'm pondering if the central message is an ode to "Lilies of the Field", "Faith by Grace", "The One in Charge", "John Bogle Philosophy" or all of the above.Cortopassi wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 10:24 pmVery good!Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 6:45 pm BTW, our very own Tyler wrote a parable about flooded farmland recently.

Re: The flooded midwest
Some interviews with farmers about the flooding popped up on my tube. I recall a few weeks ago that USDA estimates seemed to imply that the flooding wasn't that big of a deal, and harvests were going to be ok. But it looks like Zero Hedge might have been right, harvests look like they're much lower in the midwest.

Don't know how related it is, but thought I'd throw this in here. How long of a lag is it between a bad harvest and when it's felt in the market? I can't imagine crop futures are bought years in advance.

Read about the mini ice age around 1780-90, the storms with softball sized hail in Northern Europe that destroyed crops, and the French Revolution. Not too much lag.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 4:53 pm Don't know how related it is, but thought I'd throw this in here.
