Amazon Prime Pantry

Post by MachineGhost »

So this is what we've all been paying sales tax in preparation for.  Very cool!

Prime Pantry is a new shopping experience on Amazon.com. Prime members can shop popular household essentials and have them conveniently delivered.

Adding your first Prime Pantry item to Cart starts a Prime Pantry box. As you shop, you see that each Pantry item tells you what percentage of a Pantry box it fills based on its size and weight. Pantry boxes are large and can hold up to 45 pounds or four cubic feet of household products. As you check items off your list, we continuously track and show you how full your box is.

You can buy as much or as little as you want for a flat $5.99 delivery fee per Prime Pantry box. Save gas, save money, save time.[/quote]

It is cool, although they have a very limited selection.  The prices on what they do have are similar to Costco's.  I think that's who they're trying to compete with.

The biggest problem is filling up the box with stuff you actually want.  It seems like it would be difficult to do that without buying a year's supply of toilet paper or a ton of soda (which I have no use for).

I also noticed the Pantry yesterday when I added some food to my cart. Every once in a while I add food, flashlights or knives rather than pay for shipping. Now I have Prime, but I thought I'd still add a few things, and they want $6. I wonder if, when I cancel Prime, I can go back to ordering food with no shipping fee and no $6 pantry fee. Probably not.

I think you misunderstand what Pantry is.  It's LOCAL grocery delivery.  Think PeaPod or WebVan.  The shipped delivery food items with no shipping (either built in or as Add On) still exists, i.e. $35 minimum order for free shipping.

Right, but the same foods I'd selected pre-Prime were just mailed. Now I cannot add them to my cart without the message "You've just started a Prime Pantry Box" and a note about a $6 fee. I just tried again to confirm it.

This is unfortunate.  I wonder if there is a work-around.
