Happy Magna Carta Day!

Post by MachineGhost »

Today is the 800th anniversary!

It was far more influential for modern civilization than the Holy Bible, but I digress.  We're likely going to need a Magna Carta II in another decade or two.  The corruption in government is so endemic now.

Yesterday was the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, which established the principle of the Rule of Law, to which even kings and other rulers are subject.  What often gets forgotten, as Eric Metaxas points out, is that the Magna Carta was a creation of the Christian church.

As the Bishops remind us, “The Church in England was central to the development of legal and human rights centuries before the French Revolution . . . the first parties to the charter were the bishops—led by Stephen Langton of Canterbury, who was a major drafter and mediator between the king and the barons; and its first and last clauses state that ‘the Church in England shall be free.’”

In other words, no human rights without religious freedom.

Perhaps the secular air-brushing isn’t that hard to understand, after all. The very words of the Magna Carta are a stumbling block for a culture that is eager to cast off its Christian heritage.

happy magna carta day..

lets try to avoid turning every discussion into the figuring out religion thread ... it is an interesting and important topic, but it gets to be a bit much when the proselytizing/debating spreads to far and wide...  (off topic posts split to religion thread)

-Government 2020+ - a BANANA REPUBLIC - if you can keep it

-Belief is the death of intelligence. As soon as one believes a doctrine of any sort, or assumes certitude, one stops thinking about that aspect of existence

I appreciate what you are saying, really.  If you were offended by the article I linked to about the Magna Carta - oops.  Sorry.  However, truth is truth and religion is fundamental to many (most?) topics worth discussing beyond the fluff of the day, so it is hard to stay away from it.  I guess I could have edited out all references to religion in the link about the Magna Carta, but then there would have been no point to posting anything and we could all just have continued in blissful ignorance.  Want to have a discussion about universities?  Hospitals?  Astronomy?  Education?  All are linked to religion and the importance thereof.  Dig deep, don't succumb to the political correctness of today's news shows.  We are all big boys here (I think) and if I don't care for a particular topic - I'll just move on and let those who enjoy it participate.  Obviously, I don't speak for anyone else but I'm usually glad to hear views other than my own.

i left the link because it was relevant to the topic  (religion was mentioned in the op).. i only moved the discussion about how many souls religion VS communists VS atheists killed VS how many god sentenced to eternal torture, over to the religion thread.
....it had nothing to do with the magna carta  as far as i can see....

Got it.  My bad (my sinful self) for jumping to conclusions that my link was a problem.  Now back to casting seeds (my saint self) ..........  Crap, double crap, I sometimes cast crap instead of seeds, and sometimes what I think is crap are seeds and vice versa.  I think I'm overly sensitive and/or goofy today - bad night of insufficient restful sleep.  ;)
