I’m staying on X myself. I can read most everyone there, and wouldn’t want to leave.
What I just said except far more concisely.

"Don't mean to sound like a broken record"

When will that cliche ever be updated / replaced?

Hopefully never. It’s a perfectly fine simile.

I'd be curious whether Smith has ever experienced a broken record that skips back to where it was before over and over. I'm guessing he hasn't. If he's able to know about and use the phrase despite that, seems like it'll survive a good long time.

There must be countless examples of this- “even a broken clock is right twice a day” Most people use digital, and a fair subset of those are used to self-correcting cable boxes, computers and cellphones and not much else for telling time.

“Just under the wire”

“burning the candle at both ends” or “~ the midnight oil”

“close, but no cigar.”

Suddenly, I’m reminded of Craigr’s post on skeumorphs in computer icons.

If one knows what a record is. Otherwise it's like one of those sayings from The Bible wherein you have no idea what it means -- like "heaping coals on your head".

Aside from the issue of using cliches ... there is using cliches for which younger generations just won't understand what they mean.

I think that it must be when all the generations finally die out who knew what they mean ... then they stop being used. Therefore, the ones who still use them when the objects no longer exist are somewhat captives of the past.

I won’t quibble- let’s say I’m running out of steam O0
but I don’t think of younger generations as captives of the past. They make their own language. When expressions stop serving us, they do often die out.

People have mostly stopped saying, “You belong in a straitjacket,” because the object isn’t used anymore.
Vinyl records, however, have made a huge resurgence.

More importantly, though, you use phrases all the time for which you may not even know the origins. We all do. Does that bring communication to a halt? Nope.

That is a timeless one.

However, am I remembering using apple cider vinegar to catch fruit flies?

Hmm, that's a new one for me. Interesting. I heard something on 'Sopranos' which I think is very similar, but it's not really family-friendly enough to post. O0

I just got a new PC. I am one of those rare birds that bought a PC after having Mac for decades. But unlike Vinny, I'm not going to wait until the old Mac falls apart. I'll be using both machines soon.

Almost two years later I am continuing to use old reliable. I do use the new one sometimes. Used it a fair amount this summer when this one was overheating during the days.

A Bing search reveals several references to it. Before reading one of them I could not fathom what it meant.

The version of that I've heard is "don't dip your pen in the company ink".

I had both Fox News and MSNBC on for many hours today up until 6 PM but no news since. Has he been caught yet? I'm amazed that he still had not with the emergence of the clear face picture of him plus the others.
