And it is still going on, yikes. I would have left politics quickly just because of the meetings!

I think it's basically over at this point. We have all the contested swing states now certified. There are no lawsuits left challenging enough votes to overturn any state. We have had hand recounts done in most of these states to verify the result. I just don't even see any long-shot paths left that Trump could possibly hope to achieve. It seems pretty cut and dry at this point that Biden will be inaugurated on Jan 20.

Remember that when push comes to shove, the state legislatures are the ones that choose the electors on Dec 14 that will vote in front of Congress on Jan 6.

Between now and Dec 14, I guess we're all about to learn a lot more about U.S. election law and procedure than we ever thought we'd need to know.

Did you not closely follow the 2000 election? You were in your early 20s then? Still in college or just out?

In many states, AZ included, electors are bound by law to vote for person that won the certified vote. Some states are more lenient and allow for "faithless electors". AZ is not one of them.

I do see the other side of the allegations though. For instance in AZ, a person who just moved to the state can legally cast a provisional ballot, and their vote should be counted if they had been living there at least 29 days. But, it sure looks weird having thousands of people pile into polling places claiming they just moved to AZ. makes you think they voted in California by mail then drove to AZ to vote again by provisional ballot. Would be awesome if that could be proven.

The real complexity here also is that it's not a Federal thing. Each state has their own unique election laws. They have a certain amount of electors granted them, and it's on them to decide how to use them. So elections laws all vary by state. So things get really complicated. Some states allow "faithless electors", some won't. I'm not sure on the other swing states, but I do know being an AZ resident myself, that once the vote was certified here it's a done deal. The full electors are going to Biden, and there is no legal way around it. The governor, Secretary of State, and the Chief Justice of our state Supreme Court all signed off on the certification. ALL are republicans I might add.

I was still in college. Didn't care enough about politics back then to vote, so all I vaguely remember about the 2000 election was a barrage of news stories (and comedy bits) about hanging chads.
