Glenn Greenwald wrote a similar article about the current use of "sources have confirmed" in journalism.

In the particular story he was talking about the "sources" were nothing more than other "journalists" who confirmed that they too had heard the story.

In the Designated Survivor TV series, which I am currently watching, each time the press secretary responds that way, the reporter says, "I'll take that as a confirm!"
