Ross Ulbricht And Silk Road

I've been fascinated by Ross Ulbricht and the story of Silk Road for a long time now. And they're finally making a movie about it! (I promise this isn't a Rickroll link this time.)

https://youtu.be/Y3VJePRaxEg

Ulbricht's family has been seeking a pardon for Ross for his crimes. He's currently serving life in prison. Certainly this movie will drum up public awareness and interest in his story, but it may not be positive. Ross allegedly commissioned several murders-for-hire. The movie, depending its portrayal, may actually cause him to be villainized.

It's too bad Robert Pattinson wasn't cast for the role as Ulbricht. He looks just like him. Maybe they couldn't afford him lol.

Ross posts regularly on Medium. Here's a sketch he posted.

It's a nice piece of art, and it's intended to have a positive bent. For me though, it honestly looks haunting.

He was a couple years behind me in high school. I didn't know him, but I know people who did. Weird.

That's his Medium page.

There's a poem that accompanies that sketch. It's meant to communicate this idea that his spirit cannot be caged. Really though, the whole thing just reads like a desperate attempt to "think their way out" of hopelessness. Man, if anything in the world convinces me to never commit a crime it's pictures like that.

They don’t, given the nature of his crimes.

He writes to his family and they post it for him.

Ok, I figured it was some arraignment like that, but you never know what they're up to with prison reforms.

lol! Cellphone in glove box and speed right at the limit these days.

Really though, Ulbricht's defence team tried to argue that law enforcement violated his Fourth Amendment rights, and that the case should be thrown out. Even if that had worked it would not have changed the fact that legal proceedings consumed like 2 years of his life and bajillions of dollars.

Even being accused of a crime can ruin a person. :-X :-X :-X :-X

Curious and fun fact about this case.

Ross Ulbricht was obsessed with the show Breaking Bad. He had it on in the background all the time while working on Silk Road. The show parallels his own story in many ways.

The series finale of Breaking Bad aired on September 29th, 2013, which he noted watching. Ross was arrested on October 1st, 2013, just two days later. It's as if the end of the show predicted his own end.

A reflective post from Ross as he marks his 8th birthday in prison. Every time he posts I am reminded to not take my freedom for granted.

I’m turning 37, my 8th birthday in prison. I guess this means I’m in my late 30s now. Is there any significance to this? Our Earth is in roughly the same position it was when the little creature that would one day become me took his first breath…by screaming and crying. So that’s something. I assume all healthy babies do it that way. For the next year or so, I lived in an egoless bliss so pure I didn’t even form memories. Why bother? No ego to protect or aggrandize. Does that mean babies are enlightened?

All these years later I'm still torn about the issue of Ross. All things considered, while I think he did deserve jail time, I don't think that a life sentence was fair.

Even from prison he's been writing interesting pieces about science and engineering. His art is quite phenomenal too. Imagine what good he could accomplish in society as a free man. He's been scared stiff, and there's no way he's do something Silk Road-ish ever again.

He is a good man. He helped more people than most politicians.

Trump is now trying to sell himself to the Libertarians by saying he'll pardon Ulbricht if elected.

Wow.

They arrested the Telegram app founder, Pavel Durov.
I wonder what’s going to happen to him.

After Biden dropping out of the race it looks like Trump's chances of winning have diminished. It further means that Ulbricht's chances of seeing the light of day outside of incarceration have diminished. Imagine your entire existence hinging on whether one man is going to win the election like that. I can't imagine the anxiety he must be feeling.
