With gold etfs and gold itself being taxed at the collectibles rate, is investing in the miners aka GDX or GDXJ a more investment friendly investment? They're taxed at the regular stock rates, which are considerably lower.

The problem is that when stocks crash, mining stocks will crash. That was my experience in 08-09. Maybe because it was a liquidity crisis.

The collectibles rate is the lower of 28% or your normal tax rate. So particularly in a retirement situation, unless you're very high income, it may not be a major problem.

The tax consequences of physical gold could cause a man to question his allegiance to the treasury.

mining stocks are so unpredictable. You could have a great mine that's functioning well and then the gov't slaps on some environmental taxes. Or you could have a junk mine that's lying about potential reserves. It's all a big mess and in no way an alternative to owning gold. The miners are one of the biggest sellers of gold, they don't want it.

Which is why you would buy an etf.

You're going to owe a hell of a lot more taxes with some luck with the miners, because they're going to massively outperform the metal.
