Here's a good post by a smart young guy I've been following for the past few years. Cullen also has an excellent series of videos on YouTube that are worth having a look at and perhaps sharing with younger folks who like to absorb financial stuff in bite-sized bits. He's better than anyone else I've seen in distilling complex topics to their essence.
Here he makes a pretty compelling case for buying T-bills (13 and 26 week is my preference) at auction and just putting them on auto-rollover (which most brokerages allow you to do) as by far the best cash option.

Of course if you're at Vanguard their Treasury MM Fund (VUSXX) has such a low ER that you could just go with that and call it a day. Not so at Schwab or FIDO which have hefty ER's. And forget about online banks...especially when the next banking crisis hits (any day now?).
Cash is far from being trash these days
