I think a truly staggering West Coast earthquake will be the worst US disaster ever.

A flooded Manhattan island would also cause a lot of problems.

We just had a small quake in my hometown of Vancouver. Scary.

There's always a fear that it's a sign of the impending "big one" that we've been expecting on the west coast for many years.

I think it's a 10% chance over the next 50 years for the Cascadia quake. Which, if you consider a revolver with ten chambers, and a game of Russian Roulette, isn't good at all. It will be like having your entire house shaken and busted apart by a giant for several minutes... and imagine a wet and cold winter with no utilities at all. Pray that it happens in July.

Yes. I remember in July 1999 inexplicably losing electricity in a summer day. No big issue regarding weather exposure. But were all getting more and more concerned with the year 2000 and what it would bring. That summer day I was saying if we experienced the same later on ... it'd not be so easy to brush it off.

Buffet often says a big east coast hurricane will be significant for Berkshire. I guess they write a lot of insurance contracts there.
